Los Alamitos Race Course, Race No # 8 | Saturday, April 30, 8:28 pm ET
1 1/16m | Open | 3 Year Olds | Purse: $150,000
Sitting at 23rd on the G1 Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 32 qualifying points as of April 25, this son of Uncle Mo needs several contenders to withdraw from the race in order to run for the roses. Despite never having found the winner’s circle in his five tries, the well-traveled Laoban amassed his point total with a third in Santa Anita’s G3 Sham S. on Jan. 9 (2 points), a second in Aqueduct’s G3 Gotham S. on March 5 (20 points) and a fourth in Keeneland’s G1 Blue Grass S. on April 9 (10 points). The Eric Guillot trainee was piloted by Jose Lezcano for the first time in the Blue Grass and overcame a poor start to set the pace before weakening late to round out the superfecta behind winner Brody’s Cause. The colt completed the 1 1/8m over a fast course in 1:51.2 and was given an 88 BRIS Speed Rating, four points below his top figure of 92 from the Gotham. Laoban raced twice as a juvenile, showing little in his debut at Del Mar before improving with a runner-up effort at Los Alamitos. Bred in Kentucky by Respite Farm, the dark bay is out of Chattertown, a daughter of Speightstown, and was foaled on Jan. 31, 2013.

Though winless in six career starts, this son of Street Cry secured a spot in the G1 Kentucky Derby with a stunning second-place finish at odds of more than 81-1 in Aqueduct’s April 9 G1 Wood Memorial S. With Aaron Gryder at the controls for the first time, Trojan Nation showed no early speed when he settled along the rail as the last of the eight Wood runners through the opening fractions. Patrick Gallagher’s charge began a sustained rally after entering the far turn and overcame trouble down the stretch to come up a head short of winner Outwork in a valiant effort. Trojan Nation completed the 1 1/8m on a muddy track in 1:52.9 and earned a career best 96 BRIS Speed Rating. The colt raced exclusively on fast tracks in Southern California prior to the Wood, with one third-place finish at Del Mar sandwiched between two off-the-board runs at Santa Anita as a juvenile.
