Horse to Watch

Secret Passage:

This son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin remained unbeaten with his second victory in as many starts in a Remington Park allowance optional claiming contest on Nov. 12. Using the same late-running style that he showed in his Oct. 14 winning debut over the same course, Secret Passage was last of five through the first three calls in the 1m 70 yards contest then commenced a rally on the far turn and put forth a steady drive while wide to gain the lead and draw off for a two-length score. With Luis Quinonez in the saddle once again, the Donnie K. Von Hemel trainee completed the race in 1:42.90 and was given an 81 BRIS Speed Rating, one point higher than what he earned in his initial outing. Bred in Kentucky by owner Pin Oak Stable, the chestnut is out of the Sky Classic mare Sweet Eloise and was foaled on April 18, 2013. He has banked $40,563 and is a candidate for the Remington Springboard Mile on Dec. 13 at the Oklahoma City track.

Awesome Speed

Roger Attfield trained the last horse to win Woodbine's Coronation Futurity and go on to capture the Queen's Plate when Norcliffe accomplished that feat in 1975-76, and the multiple Hall of Famer seems to be in a good position for a repeat with this son of Lonhro. Under regular rider Emma-Jayne Wilson, Awesome Speed grabbed the lead out of the gate in the Nov. 8 Futurity and never looked back, cruising to a 9 ¾-length romp against nine rivals. He completed the 1 1/8-mile test for Canadian-foaled juveniles in 1:51.10 and was given a career best 96 BRIS Speed Rating. Awesome Speed, a maiden winner on debut Sept. 19 when sprinting 7F over Woodbine's Polytrack, came into the Futurity off a third-place run in the grassy 1 1/16m Cup and Saucer S. on Oct. 11. Attfield intended to give his charge a rest following that effort but the colt wanted to do more and was given another opportunity for a stakes score. Bred in Ontario by Adena Springs, the dark bay is out of the Touch Gold mare Reggae Rose and was foaled on Feb. 11, 2013.
