Churchill Downs Race # 6, 8:30 pm ET, June 27
6F | G 3| Open | 2 Year Olds | Purse: $100,000
The first graded stakes of the year for juveniles in North America will surely result in Kentucky Derby dreams for the top performers, whose connections can only hope to be racing again under Churchill Downs' twin spires early next May. Trainer Bret Calhoun has the one to beat in He's Comin in Hot. The Early Flyer gelding needed three tries to break his maiden but hit the board each time and owns a win and runner-up finish on this oval. The winner of his April 9 debut, Cocked and Loaded, came back to take Belmont Park's Tremont S., and He's Comin in Hot was 5 ½ lengths ahead of subsequent Royal Ascot stakes heroine Acapulco when completing the exacta in a May 8 maiden race here. Shoot Craps overcame a slow start to collect the show check in a May 23 Churchill maiden contest then broke Belmont Park's 5F turf track record in his return 20 days ago. Patrick Rocks invades from Maryland after capturing a maiden event in his second attempt there and jockey Victor Carrasco ships in with him. Conditioner Steve Asmussen has two chances to win the Bashford Manor with Sapphire Storm and Show Bound. The former was a good third when making his initial outing versus statebreds at Lone Star Park then took a maiden race 17 days ago at Indiana Grand. Show Bound switches to dirt after running third behind Shoot Craps on grass in his only start. Justanotehrmorgan is winless in four races but finished in the money at both Keeneland and Prairie Meadows.
Dothat Dance got off slowly when beginning his career at Churchill on May 23 but did make up nearly seven lengths in the stretch of that 5F contest. Maiden Roman's Chance tries tougher despite failing to get his picture taken in three Gulfstream Park starts, the last of which came on turf.

Despite a pedigree that suggests this son of Awesome Again will prefer longer distances, Awesome Slew sprinted right into the winner's circle in his career debut on June 27 at Monmouth Park. Under jockey Paco Lopez, the colt stalked pacesetter Not So Quiet Man through an opening split of 22.73, disposed of that rival and repelled a bid from favorite Remarkable Tale in route to a 1 ¼-length victory. Awesome Slew hit the wire in the 5F dash in 58.76 and was awarded a solid 71 Beyer Speed Figure. Bred in Florida by owner Live Oak Plantation's Live Oak Stud, the bay is out of the Seeking the Gold mare Slewfoundmoney and was foaled on Feb. 6, 2013. Awesome Slew is conditioned by Eddie Plesa, Jr. and banked $20,520 in his initial outing.

He's Comin In Hot
Trainer Bret Calhoun has had considerable success when bringing Texas-breds to race at Churchill Downs in recent years, and He's Comin in Hot added to the laurels when he wired the field in the G3 Bashford Manor S. under the twin spires on June 27. With regular rider Jamie Theriot aboard once again, the son of Early Flyer used his speed from the rail and maintained control throughout the 6F contest before prevailing by 3 ¾ lengths over Show Bound and five other overmatched rivals. He's Comin in Hot crossed the wire in 1:10.90 and earned a 73 Beyer Speed Figure. The gelding began his career by completing the trifecta in an April 9 maiden race at Keeneland and improved in his next outing to place second in another 4 ½F contest at Churchill. He's Comin in Hot graduated in his third race, also at the Louisville track, when he set the pace for the first time and drew off late to take a 5F event by 4 ½ lengths. The bay was bred by owner Douglas Scharbauer's Valor Farm, Inc, and is out of out of stakes winner Shocktime, by Langfuhr. He's Comin in Hot was foaled on Feb. 14, 2013 and is his dam's first foal to race. The winner's share of the Bashford Manor's $100,000 purse increased He's Comin in Hot's earnings to $96,510, and Calhoun said his charge will likely make his next start in either the Prairie Gold Juvenile S. on July 18 at Prairie Meadows or the G3 Sanford S. one week later at Saratoga Race Course.
