Mountaineer Juvenile Stakes

Mountaineer Park Race # 1, 2:00 pm ET, Aug 1
6F | Open | 2 Year Olds | Purse: $100,000

The G3 West Virginia Derby undercard kicks off with this $100,000 event that drew entrants from as far north as Saratoga and as far south as Gulfstream Park. Churchill Downs invader Mayor Mac was installed as the 6/5 morning line favorite off a front-running debut win on June 27 at Churchill Downs. The Discreetly Mine colt was flattered when the show finisher from that contest, Unbridled Outlaw, returned to break his maiden at Ellis Park on July 25. The 91 BRIS Speed Rating Mayor Mac earned is easily tops in this field and 10 points higher than the 81 Bullet Gone Astray was awarded for capturing a maiden race in the Gulfstream slop on June 28. Three of the six runners behind Bullet Gone Astray that day had returned to win next out when entries for this race were drawn, so the Florida shipper looks like a formidable foe. Save the Drama is slated to wheel back in seven days after never recovering from a slow break and bumping in Saratoga's G3 Sanford S. He'll reunite with Jose Garcia, who was in the irons when the gelding lost by a neck and then won by the same margin in two maiden races at Presque Isle Downs. Unbeaten Kiosk's Cause is the only stakes winner in the field, having taken the statebred Hoover S.

Unbridled Outlaw:

Trainer Dale Romans has enjoyed outstanding success in recent years with juveniles at Ellis Park, and this pricey son of Unbridled's Song added to those achievements when he overcame trouble to break his maiden there in a July 25 6F contest. With Miguel Mena at the controls for the first time, Unbridled Outlaw ducked in at the start and hit the rail early before shifting out on the turn and gaining the lead down the stretch. Against five rivals, the colt finished half a length ahead of pacesetter R Rated Superstar in a final time of 1:09.91. The 81 BRIS Speed Rating was five points below the 86 Unbridled Outlaw earned when he ran a troubled third in his career debut four weeks earlier at Churchill Downs. Bred in Kentucky by the partnership of Betz/Blackburn/J. Betz/Ramsby/CNHHNK, the dark bay is out of the graded stakes-winning Menifee mare Letgomyecho and was foaled on March 18, 2013. Kempton Bloodstock signed a $330,000 ticket at the Keeneland 2014 September Yearling Sale to purchase the colt, who has earned $22,170, for owner Albaugh Family Stable. If his connections choose to step straight into a graded stakes next, Unbridled Outlaw could join Romans' string at Saratoga or await the G3 Iroquois S. during Churchill Downs' September meet.

Uncle Vinny

Uncle Vinny gave trainer Todd Pletcher his sixth victory in Saratoga's G3 Sanford S. and freshman sire Uncle Mo his first stakes winner when he was elevated to the top spot in that July 25 contest via the disqualification of Magna Light. Magna Light set the pace in the 6F race and appeared in route to an easy victory when the Rudy Rodriguez trainee veered out down the stretch and then drifted back in and interfered with eventual show finisher Percolator. Under regular pilot John Velazquez, Uncle Vinny avoided trouble with an outside rally from mid-pack that carried him past Percolator late and proved to be the winning move. Magna Light crossed the wire three quarters of a length ahead of Uncle Vinny, who was a half-length clear of Percolator. Following an inquiry and objection by Percolator jockey Kendrick Carmouche, the stewards placed Magna Light third and Uncle Vinny inherited the score. The race's final time was 1:02.92 and Pletcher's charge received a career best 88 BRIS Speed Rating.
