Evangeline Star Stakes

Evangeline Park Race # 10, 10:53 pm ET, Aug 29
6 F | Open | Auction | 2 Year Olds | Purse: $75,000

A field of 10 juveniles was entered to battle in this stakes restricted to horses who passed through the 2015 Stars of Tomorrow Sale. Kid Creole was installed as the 7-2 morning line favorite off a romping victory in a statebred maiden turf race here. But he could be vulnerable cutting back from 7 ½F and returning to the main track over which he was winless in two tries. Copper Cajun is a logical threat coming off a similarly decisive score here 16 days ago against fellow Louisiana-breds at this distance. Line of Stars broke his maiden at first asking versus statebreds on this track and was flattered when the runner-up won next out. Won Again is the only other winner in this group and broke his maiden at the statebred MC 20000 level. He followed that up by running last of 10 in the Louisiana Cup Juvenile S. on Aug. 8 at Louisiana Downs. Zackarooney appears to be the most imposing of the maidens in here, having completed the trifecta in consecutive open company maiden special weight events.

Horse to Watch

On Fire:

Trainer Simon Callaghan, owner Arnold Zetcher and jockey Gary Stevens made it to the 2015 Kentucky Derby and Preakness with Firing Line, who was a game runner-up in Louisville to eventual Triple Crown champ American Pharoah, and the trio may have a 2016 classic contenter in On Fire. The son of Friesan Fire used a stalk and pounce style to defeat eight rivals in a loaded maiden race on Aug. 26 at Del Mar. On Fire completed the 1m race in 1:38.77 and was given a 65 Beyer Speed Figure for his half-length victory. In his only previous start, On Fire collected the show check in a July 25 6F Del Mar maiden race when beaten 5 ¼ lengths by subsequent G2 Saratoga Special S. hero Exaggerator. Bred in Kentucky by Golden Pedigree LLC, the bay is out of the El Corredor mare Ba Ba's Bunch and was foaled on foaled March 14, 2013. On Fire originally sold for $55,000 at the Keeneland 2013 November Breeding Stock Sale and then again for $140,000 at the Keeneland 2014 September Yearling Sale. The colt has earned $50,400 in his two starts and could add to that with a return in the $300,000 G1 FrontRunner S. on Sept. 26 at Santa Anita.

Upcoming 2yo Maiden & Allowance Races

Wednesday September 2

Remington Park Race # 8: 5 ½F Alw 33000n2L - Six of the 11 entrants have competed in stakes, including Moon Hopper, who was a close fourth in the TTA Sales Futurity at Lone Star Park in July. Mexico-bred Moyahua rallied nicely to win his debut and was flattered when the runner-up from that July 10 race came back to score. Ghost Trail had two second-place efforts before breaking his maiden for trainer Bret Calhoun, and makes his first start with conditioner Tracy Norris after a private purchase.

Thursday September 3

Saratoga Race # 6: 5 ½F Turf Mdn 83k - Ian Smith held the lead in the stretch in a similar contest here in early August but was caught late and settled for second. Rappel completed the superfecta in that race while encountering traffic down the lane. First-time starter Whence is nominated to the Kentucky Downs Juvenile S. Strike Midnight is highly-regarded by his connections and a half-brother to three stakes winners.

Sudden Surprise

This Todd Pletcher trainee from the first crop of stallion Giant Surprise remained unbeaten and became a stakes winner when he scored an easy two-length victory in the $200,000 Funny Cide S. for New York-breds on Aug. 28 at Saratoga. Racing against just four rivals, Sudden Surprise vied for the lead early, inched clear approaching the quarter pole and pulled away in the upper stretch under a hand ride from jockey John Velazquez. The homebred for Mike Repole, who campaigns as Repole Stable, hit the wire in 1:16.42 for 6 ½F and was awarded a 79 Beyer Speed Figure. Sudden Surprise was coming off a 2 ¾-length debut win against nine statebreds on July 30 at Saratoga.
