Horse to Watch

Gift Box:

Chad Brown proved to be as successful in forecasting the weather as he is in training horses when he entered this son of Twirling Candy as Main Track Only in a grassy Oct. 3 Belmont Park maiden race. When poor conditions forced the race off the turf, Gift Box drew into the eight-horse field for a 1 1/16m event over a sloppy (sealed) course. With Javier Castellano again at the controls, the colt overcame bumping early and late plus a wide trip to get up in time for a nose victory over Matt King Cole, who was 18 lengths clear of show finisher Cumblerland River. Gift Box it the wire in 1:43.00 and earned a 93 Beyer Speed Figure. In his only previous start, Gift Box completed the trifecta in a 6F Saratoga maiden race after being jostled at the start. Bred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall, Carrie Brogden and Craig Brogden, the gray/roan is out of the Unbridled's Song mare Special Me. He was foaled on March 23, 2013, and is a half-brother to graded stakes-winning filly Stonetastic. Owner W.S. Farish purchased Gift Box for $135,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky 2013 November Sale and the colt has banked $59,300 in his two starts. Brown said he plans to train his charge up to the G2 Remsen S. on Nov. 28 at Aqueduct.

Brody's Cause

Drubbed by more than 25 lengths when he made his career debut in an Aug. 1 maiden turf race at Ellis Park, this son of Giant's Causeway is now a G1 winner and top contender for the G1 Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Oct. 31 at Keeneland. Switched to the dirt for his second start, Brody's Cause used a serious sustained rally to whip eight rivals in a 1m maiden special weight on Sept. 11 under the twin spires at Churchill Downs. But his real coming out party came at Keeneland on Oct. 3 when the Dale Romans trainee rallied from the clouds to score an 11-1 upset in the $500,000, Claiborne Breeders' Futurity, which gave him an automatic fees-paid berth into the Juvenile and 10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points. With Corey Lanerie in the saddle for the first time...
