American Freedom

Trainer Bob Baffert was terribly disappointed when this son of Pulpit failed as the favorite to win the G3 Pat Day Mile S. on Churchill Downs’ G1 Kentucky Derby undercard, but American Freedom redeemed himself with a gutsy score a couple of weeks later in Pimlico’s Sir Barton S. two races before the G1 Preakness Stakes With jockey Florent Geroux in the irons for the first time, the colt pressed pacesetter Fearless Dragon early, put that foe away about 5 ½f from home and then was joined by Donegal Moon on his outside. As those two raced together, Voluntario challenged them from the rail and gained a slim lead before American Freedom put away Donegal Moon near the sixteenth pole and outkicked Voluntario for a one-length victory.
