Horse to Watch

Tekton:

Whether this son of Bernardini found the right surface, jockey or rivals or he's just a late-bloomer, Tekton had an absolute breakout performance in an optional claiming contest at Laurel Park on May 21. Partnered with jockey Alex Cintron for the first time, Anthony Dutrow's charge rated mid-pack early in the six-horse field, made his bid after six furlongs and quickly opened up on his foes in route to a 10 ¾-length romp. The colt covered the 1 1/16m distance in 1:45.41 and earned an 88 Beyer Speed Figure, a whopping 18 points above his previous best of 70 from his maiden-breaker in his second start at Laurel Park last December. In his sophomore debut, Tekton checked in a distant eighth of 12 after a troubled trip in an Oaklawn Park optional claimer on January 19. He showed little there a month later when beaten 10 lengths in an allowance race. After several more works at Oaklawn, Tekton moved to Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland to prepare for his return. Bred in Kentucky by Gainesway Thoroughbreds Ltd., the bay is out of Touch Love, by Not For Love, and was foaled on April 15, 2012. He is a half-brother to multiple stakes-winning filly Starfish Bay. John Ed Anthony, who campaigns as Shortleaf Stable, Inc., purchased him for $190,000 at the Keeneland 2013 September Yearling Sale and Tekton has banked $49,647 in his five races. The Triple Crown nominee appears ready to step into stakes company and will have many options for shipping out of his Fair Hill base.
