Horse to Watch

Triple Creek:

This son of Hat Trick (JPN) needed five tries to break his maiden but did so stylishly with a change of tactics that put him on the lead right out of the gate in route to a front-running romp at Turfway Park on Jan. 31. With Albin Jimenez on board for the return engagement, Triple Creek cruised to a three and three quarters lengths victory as the odds-on favorite against 10 overmatched rivals. The Michael Maker trainee stopped the clock in the 1m race over a fast synthetic surface in 1:40.37 and earned a career best 84 BRIS Speed Rating. Triple Creek began his career with two off-the-board finishes on dirt last fall at Keeneland and Churchill Downs, respectively. He ended his juvenile campaign with consecutive runner-up efforts in 1m contests at Turfway and trained steadily afterwards for his return. Bred in Kentucky by Sanford R. Robertson, the dark bay is out of Lady Lyra, by Storm Creek, and was foaled on March 22, 2013. Owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey bought Triple Creek for $95,000 at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale and the colt has earned back $20,580 of his purchase price. An early nominee to the Triple Crown, Triple Creek seems a logical candidate for Turfway's Kentucky Derby preps, the listed John Battaglia Memorial S. on March 12 and the G3 Spiral S. on April 2.

Awesome Banner

This son of Awesome of Course ran his record to a perfect three-for-three when he once again ran his rivals off their hooves in the G2 Swale S. on Jan. 30 at Gulfstream Park. With regular pilot Jose Caraballo in the saddle, Awesome Banner gunned it from the gate and set a pressured pace ahead of Noholdingback Bear, disposed of that rival nearing the quarter and kicked clear with ease for a five-length victory over second wagering choice Economic Model. The colt completed the 7f over a fast track in 1:21.81 and was awarded a career best 99 BRIS Speed Rating, a figure he has improved in each start. Stanley Gold's charge set Gulfstream's 4 ½f track record in his initial outing on June 5 and went to the sidelines shortly thereafter with a knee chip that required surgery. He returned better than ever in the G3 Hutcheson S. on Jan. 2 and dusted six foes with another gate-to-wire romp. A Florida homebrerd for Jacks or Better Farm, Inc., the bay is out of the Zamindar mare Miranda Stands and was foaled on Jan. 14, 2013. The Swale score upped his earnings to $215,020, and Awesome Banner is likely to stretch out and put his perfect record on the line against similarly unbeaten multiple graded stakes hero Mohaymen in the Feb. 27 G2 Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream.
