Withhold the one to beat in Northumberland Plate

Withhold looks a Group performer masquerading as a handicapper and rates a solid bet to land the feature contest at Newcastle on Saturday, the historic 2m Northumberland Plate Handicap (14:05).

The Roger Charlton trained five-year-old is very lightly-raced for his age and has won three of his 10 starts. Withhold has also been placed on four occasions and is 1-1 in class 2 company, the grade of this race.

That success came on his final start of last season when he made a mockery of his handicap mark of 87 to easily land the 34-runner Cesarewitch at Newmarket by 3 3/4 lengths. After tracking the leaders, Withhold took up the running a mile from home and never looked in any danger from then on.

He forged clear inside the final furlong to quickly put the race to bed, winning with any amount in hand. It was an awesome display in the toughest staying handicap of the season, and one which suggested he needed keeping firmly onside and was a Group performer in the making.

If that is to prove the case, then a 12lb rise in the weights is unlikely to be enough to stop him going in again. Withhold, who runs in the colours of big punter and Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club owner Tony Bloom, is also unexposed at the trip having won once and and finished second in two starts.

So taking everything into account, Withhold looks worth a wager to take this en route to better things. He’s among many experts’ Northumberland Plate betting tips and we’re no exception based on the pick of the form.

Amazing Red feared most

There are plenty of dangers lurking in the wings and among those is Amazing Red; a progressive sort who is unexposed at the trip and therefore feared most.

The Ed Dunlop trained five-year-old comes into the race in fine form having won two of his last three starts. In the last of those over 1m 6f, Amazing Red stayed on strongly to win going away by 3 1/2 lengths off a mark of 93.

It was an authoritative display which suggested he was well ahead of the assessor, so a 5lb rise in the weights therefore looks lenient. Amazing Red will also not be hindered by the step back up to 2m in this as he is 1-1 at the trip having won at Kempton three starts back.

The only negative is that he has failed to make the frame on his two runs on the all-weather surface, however he didn’t run too badly over 1m 4f here earlier in the year when sixth of 14 to Stargazer.

On the plus side, there is no doubt that Amazing Red has come into his own since tackling longer distances and he looks a stayer on an upward curve capable of making a bold bid in this.

Natural Scenery holds superb  each-way claims

Natural Scenery has a superb record on the Tapeta and looks the each-way play in the race having dropped to a handy mark.

The Godolphin owned mare, who hails from the yard of Saeed Bin Suroor, has won three times and finished second in four runs on the artificial surface.

Natural Scenery is also 2-3 over course and distance, with the first of those successes coming in a competitive nine-runner affair where she scored easing down by 2 1/2 lengths off a mark of of 95.

She went on to run a blinder in this 12 months ago when beaten just half-a-length into second by High Power off 103. Natural Scenery also ran very well when next time up when fourth in a Group 3 at Goodwood off an official rating of 105.

This daughter of Dubawi was far disgraced when last seen in action at Meydan back in March when a 6 1/2 lengths ninth of 16 to top class stayer and subsequent Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Vazirabad in a Group 2 off 107.

Natural Scenery now reverts to handicap company off a rating of 101. That makes her a major contender at the weights at a track and on a surface which clearly plays to her strengths.
