Land Force is a course and distance winner and clear on industry ratings, so fancied to lead home an Aidan O’Brien one-two in a race that Ballydoyle maestro has won 13 times before. Stablemate Van Beethoven is the main danger, while Marie’s Diamond is the each-way bet of the race. Learn all about this race in our 2018 Railway Stakes betting tips preview.

O’Brien a Force to be reckoned with and likely to Land spoils in Railway Stakes

Aidan O’Brien is bidding to draw level with namesake Vincent as the most successful trainer in the history of the Railway Stakes at The Curragh, and holds a strong hand in this year’s renewal. Of the Ballydoyle battalions, Land Force comes in to the juvenile 6f Group 2 contest with the biggest reputation as a course and distance winner.

After making all on tough going underfoot in a maiden, he was a 2 1/2 lengths third to Fairyland also at this venue in a Listed affair. Land Force is out of a Rock Of Gibraltar mare and his grandfather won this race back in 2001 on route to even greater things.

Given that breeding, he should be able to take that step forward from a half-a-length third to Shang Shang Shang when never quite getting to the leaders in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes last week.

Connections are willing to turn Land Force and other Royal Ascot runners out again so soon, and that means there’s more to come from them. Whether he needs a less tactical ride and more prominent display at the head of affairs remains to be seen.

Land Force is the only course and distance winner in the lineup and, although this demands more than his maiden, he should be making his presence felt.

Van Beethoven the danger

Stablemate Van Beethoven is the clear danger because he finished in front of Land Force when they last met, though didn’t come on for the run when racing in Listed company again last time out.

Like his stablemate, he made all to land his second start at Naas before going to The Curragh for the Marble Hill Stakes when chasing home Fairyland. Van Beethoven, a son of Scat Daddy, then dropped back in trip to 5f for the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Although he couldn’t match the pace of the winner and runner-up, he ran on well towards the finish. That suggested stepping Van Beethoven back up to the 6f of this would suit.  The only slight concern is that he left his last race over course and distance behind him rather than improving for it.

Given the strength-in-depth of the hand O’Brien has here, it would be no surprise to see Van Beethoven make the frame again. That Listed place form over course and distance puts him above most of the opposition.

Marie’s Diamond

With O’Brien duo Land Force and Van Beethoven well ahead of the field on industry ratings, who completes the one-two-three is wide open, so British runner Marie’s Diamond is worth an each-way wager for Mark Johnston.

He’s won two of his four starts for the Middleham handler, including when making all over this trip in an novice auction stakes race at Chester last time out.

Marie’s Diamond was three lengths clear of the field approaching the furlong marker and only had to be ridden and pushed out to keep a straight course all the way to the line. Although the winning margin was reduced by about half, it will still a brave front-running display.

His form behind Cosmic Law and The Irish Rover at Epsom and Newbury previously may be better than it first appears, as Marie’s Diamond wandered all over the place when finishing sixth of seven on soft ground to the former.

If British champion Flat jockey Silvestre De Sousa can keep him focused, then Marie’s Diamond holds every chance of a place here.
