Classic case can be made for Happily odds

Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the 1000 Guineas four times, including the last two runnings, and Happily looks the pick of his entries for this year’s renewal at Newmarket on Sunday, 6 May (15:35)

The beautifully bred daughter of Galileo progressed throughout last season when winning four of her seven starts. Two of those successes came in Group 1 company and on each occasion Happily showed a really willing attitude to get the job done. She took on the colts in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere Grand Criterium at Chantilly and, after getting a troubled passage, dug deep to pull clear near the line and beat Olmedo by 1 1/4 lengths.

Masar finished a nose further back in third and pulverised the opposition in the Group 3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket recently when scoring by nine lengths. That is top class form at the highest level and Happily looks sure to progress even further as a three-year-old. She looks to have all the right attributes for this race and is going to be a tough nut to crack.

Happily odds thus get the top spot among 1000 Guineas ante post betting tips.

Wild Illusion bets suggest she’s a formidable opponent

Wild Illusion looks the pick of the home contingent and a major contender for trainer Charlie Appleby. The daughter of Dubawi won two of her three starts as a juvenile, rounding off the campaign with success in the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac over 1m at Chantilly.

Wild Illusion stayed on strongly to beat Polydream by by 1 1/2 lengths and had some smart performers such as Magical in-behind. Although sent off 25/1, there was no fluke about the success in what was a clean run race. There was lots to like about the way in which Wild Illusion responded generously to her riders’ urgings and found plenty for pressure.

The runner-up is also very highly regarded and went into the race unbeaten in two starts, having landed a Group 3 impressively in the last of those at Deauville. It gives the form a solid look and Wild Illusion bets appeal as she’s looks the type to do well as a three-year-old. She also has proven form at the trip and is versatile as regards ground having won on good and soft.

Soliloquy each-way also has a shout

Soliloquy put herself firmly in the picture for this when running out an emphatic winner of the 7f Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes here on seasonal reappearance, so looks a powerful second string for trainer Appleby. The daughter of Dubawi made virtually all the running in the hands of William Buick and, when asked to go about her business inside the last, quickened smartly to readily beat the well-regarded Altyn Orda by 1 3/4 lengths

Soliloquy was pricking her ears throughout the last furlong and finished with plenty of running left in the tank. The way in which she hit the line going away suggested that she would have no problem with the extra furlong in this. Although she needs to be supplemented, there is little doubt that her owners Godolphin will stump up the cash to let her take part.

They would be crazy not to do so as Soliloquy is clearly a very exciting prospect. The fact that she has winning form at the track, and handled the famous dip so well, are other big ticks towards her 1000 Guineas credentials.

After just three starts she also remains open to stacks of progress so, at the odds on offer, Soliloquy is each-way appeal.
