Gustav Klimt odds have plenty going for them in 2000 Guineas

Gustav Klimt looks a worthy ante post favourite to provide trainer Aidan O’Brien with yet another winner of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday, 5 May (15:35). The Irish handler has won the first Classic of the Flat season a record eight times courtesy of King of Kings (1998), Rock of Gibraltar (2002), Footstepsinthesand (2005), George Washington (2006), Henrythenavigator (2008), Camelot (2012), Gleneagles (2015) and Churchill (2017).

In Gustav Klimt, he has a really exciting prospect who signalled himself out as something special when landing the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at this venue on his final start as a juvenile. Although the winning margin was only a head, that does not tell the whole story. After chasing the leaders, Gustav Klimt got badly buffeted by rivals either side when trying to hold his position two from home. It was interference which could have put an end to his chances but, when jockey Ryan Moore switched the son of Galileo sharply left to get a run up the far rail to make up the lost ground, he showed a smart turn of foot and galloped on strongly to get up close home.

Gustav Klimt was well on top at the finish, so it was an incredible effort given how the race panned out, and the blend of speed and guts shown was impressive. He has since shown that he has trained on when easily landing the 2000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown last month when showing a smart turn of foot to readily beat Imaging by 1 3/4 lengths on heavy ground over 7f which was far from ideal. Although last when turning in, Gustav Klimt accelerated up the straight and looked to be going away at the finish. It was another taking display in the hands of Moore.

With further improvement assured and the step-up to 1m sure to suit, Gustav Klimt odds look the one to be on and he’s going to take some beating.

Elarqam bets feared most

Elarqam was unbeaten in two starts as a juvenile and rates the main danger to Gustav Klimt, according to our 2000 Guineas ante post betting tips. The Mark Johnston trained colt looked an above average sort when landing a York maiden by 3 3/4 lengths, and took the step up into Group 3 company in his stride when beating Tip To Win by 2 1/4 lengths at this venue.

Elarqam raced prominently throughout in the latter and stayed on strongly inside the final furlong without his rider ever having to get serious. He was well on top at the finish and it was a most taking display from the son of Frankel. Elarqam is a big strapping sort and looks the type who should come into his own as a three-year-old. He clearly has a big engine and reports are that he has thrived over the winter. This horse falls into the “could be anything category” and, although his form is not at strong as Gustav Klimt’s, Elaraqam bets make for an exciting prospect who looks sure to make a bold bid in the 2000 Guineas to maintain his unbeaten record.

Emaraaty each-way value

Of those at bigger prices, Emaraaty is each-way value and looks a lively outsider. After shaping with plenty of promise when fourth of 16 at Sandown on debut, the John Gosden trained son of Dubawi looked one to keep onside when making all to score very easily by 2 1/4 lengths at Newbury. Emaraaty was pitched into the Group 1 Dewhurst on the back of that facile success and ran too bad to be true in finishing a well-beaten eighth of nine to U S Navy Flag. The way in which he weakened tamely two from home suggested something was amiss and Emaraaty has since proved his well-being by winning a minor contest on the all-weather at Newcastle on seasonal reappearance by six lengths.

That is an unconventional warm-up for the 2000 Guineas, but it will have done Emaraaty’s confidence the world of good.  Handler Gosden is also a master at getting one primed for the big day like this Group 1 contest, so Emaraaty remains with potential and looks capable of out-running his odds.
