Class-dropping Tis Marvellous ready to cut a Dash

Tis Marvellous disappointed last time out but is strongly fancied to bounce back and land ths spoils in the Shergar Cup Dash that gets proceedings underway at Ascot on Saturday (13:05) now eased in grade.

The Clive Cox trained four-year-old trailed in a well-beaten 25th of 26 to Gifted Master in the Stewards’ Cup at Glorious Goodwood and was never able to get competitive at any stage. However, prior to that he had run an absolute stormer to finish a length fourth of 28 to Bacchus in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot.

After racing towards the far side from stall five, he made good late headway when switched right two from home to be gaining all the way to the line. It was a blinding effort from what turned out to be a poor draw in one of the hottest 6f sprint handicaps of the season and one which in the circumstances could be upgraded.

This is far less competitive and Tis Marvellous is able to race in it off just 1lb higher. He should be more than capable of winning a race of this nature off his current mark of 100, especially judged on his find fourth to Blue Point in a Group 3 over this course and distance last season off an official rating of 110.

The winner has gone on to land this year’s Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes while the runner-up Harry Angel has scored twice since at the highest level. A repeat of that run, or his one in the Wokingham, would be more than good enough to see Tis Marvellous land this.

He also has a very able pilot in the plate in the shape of Holly Doyle, so rates the standout NAP bet on the six-race card. Tis Marvellous thus heads our 2018 Shergar Cup betting tips for this novel team event at Ascot.

Fire Brigade gets the call in Mile

In the Shergar Cup Mile (14:50), the Michael Bell trained Fire Brigade has plenty going for him and looks a decent value punt. This four-year-old has made the frame in both his starts over course and distance and looks nicely treated on the pick of his form, so is our NB (next best) bet.

This son of Firebreak progressed through last season when winning four times, with his last success came off a rating of 94 at Leicester in October. Prior to that, he ran a cracker when sent off a heavily-backed 7/2 joint-favourite and finishing a half-a-length third of 16 to the now 117-rated Addeybb in the Silver Cambridgeshire at Newmarket.

The runner-Up Afaak has gone on to finish a fine second in this year’s Royal Hunt Cup off 103, and Fire Brigade was receiving just 3lb and 2lb respectively from those rivals. That is very strong form and makes his current mark of 97 look workable.

Fire Brigade was runner-up off it at Haydock two starts back after which he was given a break for a wind operation. He then caught the eye on his return to action when a tenderly handled 3 1/2 lengths eight of 14 to Humbert at Newcastle.

Next time up, Fire Brigade was then well-backed for the valuable and ultra-competitive Golden Mile at last week’s Glorious Goodwood meeting, but got ruled out on the day on the advice of the vet. That could prove to be a blessing in disguise as this is nowhere near as tough as that contest.

He also has the services of crack French jockey Gerard Mosse in the saddle and he is one from two when teaming up with the yard in the past 12 months. That is another plus, so there is simply nothing not to like about the profile of Fire Brigade in this.

Eddystone Rock each-way value in Challenge

Eddystone Rock has become well-treated and looks cracking each-way value in the Shergar Cup Challenge (14:15). The John Best trained six-year-old was last successful at York 12 months ago when showing a good attitude to beat Titi Makfi by a short-head in a hot 20-runner handicap.

He is now able to race off 2lb lower and having shaped nicely in two of his four starts this season. In the first of those, he stayed on to finish a 4 1/2 lengths fifth of 15 to Grey Britain at Newmarket and that race has thrown-up plenty of subsequent winners.

There was also lots to like about his latest run over this course and distance at Royal Ascot back in June when ninth of 17 to the progressive Dash Of Spice in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes. After being steadied at the start and dropped in from a wide draw, Eddystone Rock quickly found himself well-behind and playing catch-up.

He did respond well to his riders’ urgings, however, and finished strongly to be beaten 7 3/4 lengths at the line. Given how the race panned out, it was a solid effort and one which suggested his time was near.

The assessor has also been kind in since dropping him a further 2lb and Eddystone Rock is the class act in the field. With Pat Cosgrave in the saddle, a bid bold looks assured; so, at the odds on offer, he had to be the each-way selection in our 2018 Shergar Cup betting tips.
