Ascot betting tips: Chatez, Flying Angel and Minella Daddy the Friday flutters

Horsebetting.com experts give their Ascot betting tips for November 23, featuring three best bets for a competitive six-race card on the Friday of the Coral Hurdle meeting. Minella Daddy has a fine record over course and distance, so rates our best bet to further enhance it with victory in the handicap chase run over just short of 3m. Trainer Alan King has his team in terrific form at present and his Chatez is the next best bet in the 2m handicap hurdle. Flying Angel, meanwhile, has fallen to a handy mark and drops in class, so makes plenty of each-way appeal in the 2m 5f Waitrose Handicap Chase. Find out more about these horses in our in-depth preview with Ascot betting tips for November 23.

Minella Daddy weighted to deliver at Ascot

Minella Daddy looks to have plenty going for him in the Davidstow Handicap Chase run over just short of 3m at at Ascot on Friday (15:15), so rates the standout bet on a competitive six-race card. This Peter Bowen trained eight-year-old has a fine record over course and distance having won once and been placed twice from three starts.

The success came two years ago where he stayed on strongly to land a 13-runner class 3 contest by seven lengths off a mark of 131. Minella Daddy then ran a cracker next time up off 142 when finding only Regal Encore 1 3/4 lengths too good over course and distance in a 14-runner Listed race.

Minella Daddy then suffered an injury when pulled up at Kempton and spent 390 days on the sidelines. However, the son of Flemensfirth showed that he retained plenty of ability when again chasing home Regal Encore in a similar grade affair over course and distance back in February off a rating of 137.

The form of the aforementioned races reads extremely well in relation to this lower grade class 3 contest, and Minella Daddy is able to race in it off 136. That gives him outstanding claims at the weights in a grade in which he has a 67 per cent strike rate, having won twice and been placed once in three outings.

Ground conditions are also ideal and Minella Daddy has run well after a break in the past, so a 200-day absence is not a concern. Taking everything into account, he looks to have the perfect profile to land the spoils in this. Hence he features as the main selection in our Ascot betting tips for November 23.

Chatez can reign supreme for in-from King

Trainer Alan King has his team in flying form, so Chatez looks worth a wager to cash-in on a drop in the weights and provide him with another winner in the 2m Coutts Handicap Hurdle (15:50). This seven-year-old was a smart performer on the level and looked a very useful recruit to the hurdling ranks when winning his first two starts over the obstacles back in the winter of 2014.

In the last of those, he drew easily clear to score by 3 3/4 lengths at Warwick. That facile success earned Chatez an official rating of 128 and at that point he was being talked of as a possible Triumph Hurdle contender. However, he has been plagued with injuries since and failed to trouble the judge in three subsequent outings over hurdles.

Chatez wasn’t disgraced in the last of those at Kempton 11 months ago, though, when fourth of 10 to the highly regarded Kayf Grace in a handicap at Kempton off a mark of 120. He is now able to race off 1lb lower and comes into this on the back of a fine half-a-length second of 12 to Dukhan on the level at Newbury last month off 96.

In relation to that Flat rating, his current jumps mark of 119 looks very exploitable. The son of Dandy Man could be potentially thrown-in at the weights and another plus is that he has a 43 per cent strike rate on the forecast going. Chatez also remains unexposed over hurdles after just five starts and has the in-form Wayne Hutchinson in the saddle. Off just 10st 7lb, his claims look glaringly obvious and he therefore had to be our next best bet of these Ascot betting tips for November 23.

Flying Angel appeals each-way

In the 2m 5f Waitrose Handicap Chase (14:40), Flying Angel makes plenty of each-way appeal now eased in grade. This Nigel Twiston-Davies trained seven-year-old has won three of his 13 starts over fences and enjoyed his finest hour when winning the Grade 1 Manifesto Novices’ Chase on the opening day of the 2017 Aintree Grand National meeting.

The son of Arcadio took up the running five from home and, after getting headed on the run-in, rallied gamely to get back up close home and beat Cloudy Dream by a length off an official rating of 150. Flying Angel got put up to 157 for that and has failed failed to sparkle in seven subsequent outings – albeit he was not totally disgraced when a 12 lengths fourth of nine to Top Notch in a Grade 2 off 156 over this course and distance 12 months ago.

He is now able to race off a reduced rating of 142 and drops into class 2 company having raced lazily in the Grade 2 Old Roan Chase at Aintree last month, when heavily-backed into 3/1 second-favourite and finishing a well-beaten sixth of eight to Frodon.

Judged on that display, it looks a shrewd move by connections to fit Flying Angel with the visor for the first time. If the new headgear has the desired effect and gets him to race with more enthusiasm, then he has a huge shout at the weights in this on the pick of his form. So, at the odds on offer, Flying Angel had to feature as the each-way punt in our Ascot betting tips for November 23.
