Class-dropping Eirene can collect in October Stakes

Eirene ran a cracker when runner-up last time out, so is strongly fancied to go one better and land the spoils in the Listed 7f October Stakes at Ascot on Saturday (16:10) now eased in grade. That run came in the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster where she went down fighting by three-quarters of a length to Dancing Star.

After being held-up at the rear, the Dean Ivory trained daughter of Declaration Of War made good headway a furlong from home and held every chance inside the last before being unable to find an extra close home. She had All Out, Pepita and Laugh Aloud in behind – in third, fourth and fifth respectively – and has nothing to fear on the book from those re-opposing rivals.

An official mark of 105 also means that she comes out top on adjusted ratings by 1lb from Lucymai (rated 104). It makes Eirene the one to beat at the weights in this less competitive contest and she comes into the race at the top of her game having previously won in good style at Chelmsford.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that she ran a cracker on seasonal reappearance when a two-length third of 11 to Soliloquy in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket. Eirene finished 3 1/2 lengths in front of the fourth home Billesdon Brook, who went on to land the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket by 1 3/4 lengths from subsequent triple Group 1 winner Laurens.

That is very strong form in relation to this, so Eirene – who goes particularly well for jockey Robert Winston – is taken to land a fourth career success and thus rates our best bet on this card among Ascot betting tips for October 6.

Spring Loaded worth siding with in Rous Stakes

In the other Listed race on the card, the 5f Rous Stakes (13:50), Spring Loaded looks terrific value to bag a 12th career success. This Paul D’Arcy trained six-year-old has a tremendous strike rate of just under 30 per cent and is one from one over course and distance.

That run came three starts back in a 20-runner Heritage Handicap where the son of Zebedee came from off the pace before showing an electric turn of foot to easily beat Poyle Vinnie by two lengths. To win an ultra-competitive contest in such manner was visually very taking and Spring Loaded has since run well in two similarly hot affairs.

In the first of those, the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood, he was denied a clear run when making good headway two from home. When eventually seeing daylight, Spring Loaded powered to the line and was gaining hand over first at the finish as a 2 1/4 lengths seventh of 26 to Gifted Master.

Given how the race panned out, it was a huge effort and he was arguably and unlucky loser. It was a similar scenario last time out for Spring Loaded when he again encountered trouble at a crucial stage before finishing a 4 1/4 lengths fifth of 20 to Gunmetal in the Great St Wilfrid at Ripon.

Those runs have earned Spring Loaded a mark of 107 – just 3lb lower than that of the top-rated in the line-up Mr Lupton, but he receives 5lb from that rival. It makes him the one to beat judged on his aforementioned success here and another plus is that Adam Kirby, who gave him a peach of a ride that day, is now back in the saddle.

There is simply nothing not to like about his profile for this, so Spring Loaded had to feature as the next bet bet in our Ascot betting tips for October 6. You can also view our separate previews of the Bengough Stakes, Challenge Cup and Cumberland Lodge Stakes on Horsebetting.com.

Alaadel appeals each-way in finale

Alaadel was a massive eye-catcher last time out and makes plenty of each-way appeal in the 5f handicap that brings proceedings to a close (16:45). That came in the class 2 Ayr Bronze Cup where the Stuart Williams trained gelding finished seventh of 23 to Lucky Lucky Man, but shaped far better than the 4 1/2 lengths he was eventually beaten suggests.

After dwelling at the start and being held-up in the centre of the huge field, the son of Dubawi was denied a clear run on several occasions when trying to mount a challenge a furlong from home. In the end his jockey had to sit and suffer behind a wall of horses as there was simply nowhere for Alaadel to go.

As a result, he finished with plenty of running left in him and it was an effort which suggested he would have gone very close granted a clear passage, and was ahead of his current mark of 85. As Alaadel now drops back down into class 3 company, the same as when last successful, it makes him a big player at the weights in this.

Alaadel is also lightly-raced for a five-year-old having had just 10 starts, winning twice. Connections also now fit him with a visor for the first time; so, if the new headgear has the desired effect, a bold bid looks assured.
