Take Cover taken to gun down Beverley Bullet rivals

Now dropped significantly in grade, veteran sprinter Take Cover looks to hold outstanding claims at the weights of landing back-to-back runnings of the feature contest at Beverley on Saturday, the Listed 5f Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes (14:45).

The 11-year-old has been a terrific servant over the years for trainer David Griffiths, winning 14 of his 46 starts. He made all 12 months ago to gamely land this by a neck from Final Venture before going on to land a Group 3 at Newbury and a Listed contest at Dundalk.

Although yet to get his head in front this season, the popular trailblazer has looked as good as ever and posted some really solid efforts in defeat. They include when a 2 3/4 lengths third to Judicial over course and distance back in June.

Take Cover also ran a cracker on his penultimate outing when a four-length runner-up to the brilliant Battaash in the Group 2 King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. He was also far from disgraced when a fine 3 1/4 lengths sixth of 15 to Alpha Delphini last time out in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at the York Ebor Festival, where he had the re-opposing Mr Lupton in behind.

This is far easier than both those assignments and Take Cover is officially joint top-rated in the line-up with Mr Lupton off 109 – yet gets 3lb from Richard Fahey’s charge. The conditions of the race are massively in his favour, so based on that this looks a great opportunity for Take Cover to get back on the scoresheet.

Final Venture feared most

Given that Final Venture went down all guns blazing when a length runner-up to Take Cover in last year’s renewal, he has to rate the main danger among our 2018 Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes betting tips having returned to form last time out when a neck second of 19 to El Astronaute in an ultra-competitive handicap at York.

The Paul Midgley trained six-year-old showed bags of early pace to lead the stands’ side group and stuck to the task really well when headed deep inside the last. It was a big step back in the right direction and he has proven winning form at this level after beating Kyllang Rock by a neck at Haydock last June.

Final Venture appears to be building up to a big performance and has a 20 per cent strike rate over the minimum trip of this. Underfoot conditions are also ideal and the booking of Luke Morris to do the steering is another plus.

He does have 5lb to find with Take Cover on official ratings but – if building on his latest effort – looks sure to go close and give that rival plenty to think about. There is also each-way betting value to be had on this competitive for the grade sprint.

Mr Lupton holds leading each-way claims

There is stacks of early pace in the line-up, so that could set the race up for a closer. Mr Lupton fits the bill if that proves to be the case and he had Take Cover 7 3/4 lengths behind in fifth when landing a seven-runner Listed contest at York back in July.

He is therefore another with leading claims and rates a solid each-way bet in this year’s Beverley Bullet. The Richard Fahey trained five-year-old has had just two starts since that success and been far from disgraced on both occasions.

In the first of those, he raced well-off the pace before finishing strongly to be a 4 3/4 lengths fourth to Battaash in the Group 2 King George Stakes at Goodwood, and crucially just three-quarters of a length behind the runner-up Take Cover.

Mr Lupton was also not far behind Take Cover last time out when ninth in the Nunthorpe, when again doing all his best work late on. He is the type that needs things to drop right, but when they do the son of Elnadim has a potent turn of foot which would make him a danger to all in this.

So at the odds on offer, Mr Lupton gets the each-way vote in our 2018 Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes betting tips. Punters should keep their eyes peeled for extra places here, and sponsors William Hill may offer enhanced terms on the day of the race.
