Stylehunter the number one Cambridgeshire choice

The big betting race at Newmarket on Saturday is the Cambridgeshire Handicap (15:40) and the progressive Stylehunter makes plenty of each-way appeal in a typically fierce renewal of the prestigious 1m 1f contest with a maximum field of 35 set to go to post.

This John Gosden trained three-year-old shaped with stacks of promise to finish runner-up on his first two starts this season behind a couple of useful sorts before getting off the mark with a facile six-length success in 10-runner maiden over 1m 2f on the all-weather at Lingfield.

Stylehunter was given a opening handicap mark of 91 on the back of that runaway victory and ran a blinder off it when a 2 1/2 lengths sixth of 30 to Ostilio in the Britannia Stakes over 1m at Royal Ascot. After racing in the centre, the son of Raven’s Pass kept on nicely inside the last to be nearest at the finish.

It was an effort which suggested there was a big pot to be had with Stylehunter and that view was confirmed when, following a break, he romped to a four-length success over Easy Tiger in a five-runner affair at Goodwood last month over the 1m 1f trip of this. The colt scored with any amount in hand and an 8lb rise in the weights looks fully justified.

A revised rating of 100 has enabled Stylehunter to sneak into this off 8st 12lb, meaning that he receives weight form all bar three of his rivals. This appears to have been the long=term target for him and Gosden has executed it perfectly to get him in at the foot of the weights. So, with more improvement on the cards, Stylehunter looks to have the ideal profile for this and thus heads our potential each-way punts in the 2018 Cambridgeshire Handicap.

Danceteria another with each-way claims

Danceteria has improved throughout the season and looks weighted to go well in the hands of Fran Berry. The David Menuisier trained three-year-old has won four of his six starts and constantly defied the handicapper.

After opening his account with a neck success in a 10-runner affair at Sandown back in June off a mark 77, the son of Redoute’s Choice went on to complete a four-timer. In the last of those successes, he could not have been more impressive when scoring over the July course here.

Danceteria made smooth headway two from home under a confident Jason Watson having earlier been held-up. When the young rider gave him a shake of the reins at the furlong marker, the response was immediate and the gelding quickened clear to easily beat Alternative Fact by 3 3/4 lengths off a mark of 93.

Not surprisingly the assessor was not impressed and hit Danceteria with a further whopping 11lb rise in the weights. However, he ran a stormer off his revised rating of 104 when a 3 3/4 lengths fifth of 19 to Hamely in a Premier Handicap at The Curragh earlier in the month.

After forfeiting vital ground when dwelling at the start, Danceteria raced keenly at the rear before powering home from the three market to be gaining hand over first at the finish. Given how the race panned out it was a terrific effort and Danceteria is now able to race in this off 1lb lower.

It makes this thriving sort a big player and he has a 75 per cent strike rate under Berry (three wins from four starts). So, taking everything into account, a bold bid looks on the cards. Danceteria is therefore another well-worth considering each-way in a race in which many bookmakers will be offering enhanced place terms.

Afaak capable of outrunning huge odds

Of those at massive odds, Afaak looks overpriced on the pick of his form. The Charlie Hills trained four-year-old ran very well over this course and distance 12 months ago when a half-a-length second of 16 to the classy Addeybb in the consolation race for this contest, the Silver Cambridgeshire.

Since notching a third career success at York back in May, the son of Oasis Dream has posted some very solid efforts to make the frame. They include when a cracking second in the Royal Hunt Cup over 1m at Ascot off a mark of 103 where he found handicap blot Settle For Bay 2 1/4 lengths too good in what is one of the hottest 1m handicap of the season.

Afaak backed that up with a good 3 3/4 lengths fourth of 15 to Alfarris over 1m 2f at Goodwood off 1lb higher. He is now 9lb better of with that rival, who at the time of writing is currently less than half his odds and favourite for this.

The swing in the weights means that there is little between them, so the huge price discrepancy makes Afaak look real each-way value. Connections are also fitting Afaak, who has shown he can be really competitive off his current mark of 104, with a visor for the first time and that could well eeke our further improvement.

His proven form in big fields is another plus and jockey Dane O’Neill is two from four on him. Afaak has plenty going for him and a far better chance than his odds would suggest, so had to feature among our each-way 2018 Cambridgeshire Handicap betting tips.
