Cheltenham betting tips: Foxtail Hill and Padleyourowncanoe feature among Showcase Saturday punts

Horsebetting.com experts give their Cheltenham betting tips for Saturday, 27 October and day two of The Showcase meeting. Foxtail Hill looks weighted to retain his crown in the 2m Randox Health Handicap Chase, so rates the NAP on this seven-race card. Padleyourowncanoe looks a value punt to put his race fitness to good use in the Masterson Holdings Hurdle, so is therefore our next best bet. Braqueur D’or, meanwhile, has been given a chance by the assessor and makes plenty of each-way appeal in the 3m 1f handicap chase that gets proceedings underway. Foxtail Hill weighted to retain Randox Health Handicap Chase crown

Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies has his team in terrific shape, so Foxtail Hill looks to hold leading claims at the weights of providing him with another winner in the 2m Randox Health Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday (15:10). This nine-year-old has won four of his 17 starts and has a good record fresh.

The last of those successes came in this race 12 month ago where he beat Le Prezien by a neck off a mark of 140. Foxtail Hill, who likes to dominate proceedings from flag fall, made all in the hands of Sam Twiston-Davies and when pressed two from home found plenty. He then dug deep on the run-in when strongly challenged to hold in grimly at the line.

It was a tremendously gutsy performance and the pair pulled 11 lengths clear of the third home. Le Prezien, from whom he was receiving just 4lb, went to to land the Grand Annual Chase at the Festival here in March off a rating of 150 to give the form a rock solid look. Foxtail Hill got put up to 147 for that victory and failed to shine in five subsequent outings.

That, however, has resulted in the handicapper cutting him plenty of slack and he is now able to race off a reduced rating of 138. It gives him outstanding claims of retaining his crown in this – especially as it looks a less competitive renewal than last year. Foxtail Hill also faces just six rivals this time around, so should have little difficulty getting an uncontested lead.

If that does prove to be the case, then he is going to be tough to peg back at a track where he has won twice and been placed once in eight starts. So, with Sam Twiston-Davies once in the saddle, and underfoot conditions ideal, Foxtail Hill’s claims in this are glaringly obvious and he thus thus features as the NAP in our Cheltenham betting tips for October 27.

Padleyourowncanoe the Masterson Holdings punt

Redicean and Gumball dominate the betting for the 2m Masterson Holdings Hurdle (14:35) but, with race fitness on his side, Padleyourowncanoe looks the value punt to land the spoils following a cracking return to action at Chepstow 14 days ago. That came in a limited handicap for four-year-olds where, after leading at the last, he battled on well on the run-in until being held close home and beaten 1 1/4 lengths by Grand Sancy.

The Colin Tizzard trained gelding shouldered top weight of 11st 10lb and was attempting to give 8lb to the winner. Given that Grand Sancy has gone on to finish a fine 2 1/2 lengths runner-up to a potentially very smart sort in a Listed contest at Kempton, it was a cracking effort from Padlyourowncanoe.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that he had some smart form to his name last season when winning twice and finished a fine 6 3/4 lengths fourth of 22 to Veneer Of Charm over this course and distance in the Fred Winter at the Festival. Although he is officially rated 14lb lower than Redicean, Padleyourowncanoe receives 8lb from that rival, so he doesn’t have an insurmountable mountain to climb if, as expected, building on his latest effort.

This race should also be run to suit and his handler has been among the winners of late. Padleyouowncanoe therefore has more going for him than his odds would suggest and rates our next best bet among the Cheltenham betting tips for October 27.

Braqueur D’or weighted to go well in opener

In the 3m 1f Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap Chase that gets proceedings underway (14:00), Braqueur D’or looks weighted to go well for in-form Ditcheat handler Paul Nicholls. This seven-year-old has won three of his 10 starts over the larger obstacles and also made the frame on four occasions.

His last success came 12 months ago at Ludlow where he scored easily by seven lengths off a mark of 129. Braqueur D’or then ran very well when third of 16 to Go Conquer in a Grade 3 handicap at Ascot off a revised rating of 139. The son of Epalo backed that up with a cracking 13 length four of 29 to Total Recall in the valuable and ultra-competitive Ladbrokes Trophy, formerly known as the Hennessy Gold Cup, at Newbury off the same rating.

Braqueur D’or was then not at his best in two subsequent outings, but now returns to action off a reduced rating of 135 having undergone wind surgery. It gives him major claims from a handicapping perspective, judged on his aforementioned runs at Ascot and Newbury.

So, given that the yard can do little wrong at present and Braqueur D’or has his ideal underfoot conditions, everything looks in place for a big run. He therefore, features as the value each-way punt in our Cheltenham betting tips for October 27.
