Dubawi Fifty up for the Chester Cup

Dubawi Fifty has a progressive profile and looks the ante post value bet for the 2m 2f Chester Cup on Friday, 11 May (15:35). The Karen McLintock trained five-year-old has an impressive strike rate having won five of his 12 starts. He is two from three on the turf, landing back-to-back contests at Ayr and Nottingham last summer before running a cracker to finish fourth of 34 to Withhold in the 2m 2f Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket.

After being held-up in the latter, Dubawi Fifty got outpaced three from home before rallying and staying on strongly to be nearest at the finish and beaten 11 lengths. It was a really solid effort, given how the race panned out, and he has looked as good as ever this year in winning twice on the all-weather before finishing a half-length third to American Gigolo last time out at Newcastle.

Dubawi Fifty is now set to meet that rival on 2lb better terms and is also 3lb better off with Stargazer who finished a neck behind in third. That should be enough to see him turn the table on both those rivals. He also remains unexposed as a stayer and is clearly right at the top of his game at present. His run in the Cesarewitch proved that he had the stamina for this; so, taking everything into account, Dubawi Fifty odds suggest he’s got the perfect profile for this historic contest.

Magical Circle bets make him a major player

There a plenty of dangers in a typically wide-open looking renewal, but the main one according to our 2018 Chester Cup ante post betting tips may well be Magic Circle on his first start for shrewd handler Ian Williams. The six-year-old showed progressive form when trained by Ralph Beckett and did very well to finish fifth in this race last year when nothing went right. An unfavourable wide draw in stall 18 meant that Magic Circle was forced to race very wide throughout and forfeit valuable ground around the tight turns of the Roodee.

It was to his credit that he kept on strongly from the furlong marker to be beaten just 2 1/4 lengths. Magic Circle finished just three-quarters of a length behind the fourth home Who Dares Wins, who had a good draw in stall seven, and is now set to meet that rival on 5lb better terms. Given how the race panned out, that gives him major claims from a handicapping perspective of turning the tables with that rival. A mark of 101 also looks workable as it’s just 4lb higher than when Magic Circle was last successful in a competitive 14-runner affair at York last August – three days before a fine fifth in the Ebor Handicap. Williams also has a knack of eeking out improvement from new inmates and, if that proves to be the case, Magic Circle bets are sure to go very close.

Who Dares Wins each-way value again

Who Dares Wins ran a stormer fo finish fourth in the Chester Cup 12 months ago, so looks sure to make another bold bid. Trained by Alan King, the six-year-old kept on strongly to be beaten just 1 1/2 lengths by Montaly. He went on to finish a fine third to Thomas Hobson in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting before disappointing somewhat when only 10th of 34 in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket when behind Dubawi Fifty.

Who Dares Wins has since posted three solid National Hunt efforts in competitive handicap hurdles, finishing third at the Aintree Grand National Festival in the last of those. The gelding is a tough sort who always gives his all and has the advantage of race fitness on his side. However, he is set to carry 8lb more than last year and now has a career-high rating on the Flat of 100 to overcome.

That is not going to be easy, but Who Dares Wins is a likeable sort who looks sure to give it his best shot and be in the thick of things at the business end of affairs.
