Laugh A Minute worth a Wentworth wager

Laugh A Minute posted a career best effort when runner-up last time out, so now eased in grade looks decent value to go one better and lands the spoils in the Listed 6f Wentworth Stakes on the final day of the Flat turf season at Doncaster this Saturday (14:05). This Roger Varian trained three-year-old has a progressive profile, having won twice and been placed four times in nine career starts.

The last of those successes came two starts back over this course and distance where he showed a smart turn of foot to readily land a four-runner conditions contest by 1 1/4 lengths from Top Score. It was a commanding performance which suggested there was better to come from the son of Mayson.

That view was confirmed when he finished a three-length second of 11 to Tantheem in a Group 3 at Deauville back in August. Although no match for the easy winner, Laugh A Minute stuck to the task nicely and had some useful sorts in-behind.

The winner, to whom he was conceding 4lb, went on to follow-up in good style in a Group 3 at Longchamp before being far from disgraced when a 2 1/2 lengths seventh of 16 to Mabs Cross in the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye at the same venue.

That gives the form a solid look in relation to this lower grade affair and Laugh A Minute comes into it having been a beak to freshen up. He is also unbeaten in two starts at the venue and is versatile as regards ground.

It’s fair to say that he does face a pair of class droppers in the shape of Donjuan Triumphant and Librisa Breeze. However, the former is hard to win with, whilst the latter has been badly out of sorts this season. They are also both far more exposed than Laugh A Minute.

So, taking everything into account, there is lots to like about the chances of Laugh A Minute in this and he therefore had to be the main selection in our Doncaster betting tips for November 10.

Irish raider Bona Fide the answer to Gillies Fillies’ Stakes

The other Listed contest on a monster eight-race card is the 1m 2f Gillies Fillies’ Stakes (13:30). Top Irish trainer Dermot Weld sends over a progressive sort in the shape of Bona Fide, who has won two of her three starts and looks well worth a crack at this level.

This Prince Khalid Abdullah owned daughter of Frankel created a favourable impression when making a winning debut in a 10-runner contest over 7f at Gowran Park, where she showed a willing attitude to find for pressure and get up close home to beat Laughifuwant by half-a-length.

Bona Fide than may have found the race coming too soon when a keeping on 4 3/4 lengths fifth of seven to Terzetto on handicap debut over 1m at The Curragh. She also appeared to be crying out for a step up in trip.

Weld duly gave her a break and there was lots to like about the way in which she resumed winning ways in a competitive 15-runner handicap over an extended 1m 1f at Gowran Park last month. After chasing the leaders, Bona Fide took up the running two from home. She was then challenged at the furlong marker but found plenty to score by half-a-length.

Bona Fide was well on top at the finish and the extra half furlong in this looks sure to suit. This does demand more, but she is clearly going the right way and hails from a yard that doesn’t go tilting at windmills. So, with further progress looking assured, Bona Fide rates out next best bet on November Handicap day at Town Moor.

Cold Stare an appealing each-way play

Elsewhere on a very competitive card, Cold Stare makes plenty of appeal in the 7f handicap (13:45) now stepped back up in trip. This gelding had some useful form to his name when trained in France, and got off the mark for new handler David O’Meara when landing an eight-runner affair over 7f at Haydock back in September with real authority.

After being held-up off the pace travelling strongly, the three-year-old made smooth headway two from home before showing a nice turn of foot to beat Starlight Romance by three-quarters of a length off a mark of 80. Cold Stare was well in command at the finish and value for much more than the winning margin suggests.

The son of Intense Focus then ran very well to finish fifth of 23 to Snazzy Jazzy in the 6f Ayr Silver Cup, and shaped a bit better than his finishing position suggests last time out over the same trip at Haydock when eighth of 11 to Confessional where he had too much use made of him early doors.

Cold Stare now steps back up to 7f, a trip over which he has a 38 per cent strike rate having won three of his eight starts. He is also able to race off a rating just 3lb higher than when last victorious (93).

It gives him every chance from a handicapping perspective in a wide open affair, while any of the forecast rain that arrives will be massively in his favour. The yard has also saddled two winner from its last 10 runners; so, at the odds on offer, Cold Stare looks decent value and therefore features as the each-way punt in our Doncaster betting tips for November 10.
