Mjjack up for the Dubai Duty Free Cup

Even giving 3lb weight-for-age away to the three-year-olds, Mjjack comes out on top on ratings for the Listed 7f feature at Newbury on Friday – the Dubai Duty Free Cup (15:55). He is thus fancied to land the spoils for trainer Karl Burke, whose Yorkshire yard is buoyant after a brace of Group 1 successes in the Emerald Isle on Irish Champions Weekend.

This four-year-old grey colt has won five of his 15 career starts and been placed on three other occasions. Mjjack ran really well in a series of hot handicaps at Ascot last season, finishing second in both the Gigaset International when staying on well in a battle for the minor honours and the Cunard, where he made most and was beaten just half-a-length.

Those efforts meant a rise in the weights and he was far from disgraced off a revised rating of 102 when sixth in the Challenge Cup at the same venue to Accidental Agent. Given that he was beaten just over three lengths, and both the winner and runner-up have come out and won group races this season, the form has a strong look to it.

As for Mjjack’s own exploits this term, he was won two of his four starts. After shaping as if needing the run and nearest at the finish when a 7 1/4 lengths fifth in the Cammidge Trophy at Doncaster on reappearance, he landed a class 2 Newmarket handicap next time up.

Mjjack was then an eight-length fourth in a similar grade affair at Haydock and subsequently off the track for 131 days. There was lots of like about his return to action at that Merseyside venue in a conditions race, however, when he ran on strongly and drew clear impressively in the final furlong to score by 4 1/2 lengths from Salateen.

Given he’s a real 7f specialist, this race is right up Mjjack’s street and Clifford Lee, who has partnered him to all four career successes over the trip, takes the ride again. Off top rating of 109, there’s simply nothing not to like about his claims, so he heads our 2018 Dubai Duty Free Cup betting tips.

Red Mist feared most getting weight

Taking the allowance Red Mist gets from his elders, the Simon Crisford trained Frankel colt has only 2lb to find on Mjjack, so is feared most after an impressive win easing down last time out. The three-year-old is two from four over this trip and drops back down to 7f after being tried over a mile on his last three starts.

Having won on debut at Sandown, Red Mist was then just held over course and distance in the Denford Stakes – a similar grade affair to this – by Hey Gaman. He was then far from disgraced when pitched into juvenile Group 2 company and a 4 1/2 lengths fourth behind Seahenge in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on St Leger day last year.

There was lots of like about Red Mist’s return to action on the all-weather at Kempton this season when he made all and easily beat Skydiving by six lengths. Connections then stepped him up in distance and went to France for two cracks at this level.

Red Mist was headed close home at Saint-Cloud going down by a short-neck and beaten just 2 1/4 lengths when third at Deauville. There were efforts that suggested he could win over a mile and he duly did in style last time out when drawing clear inside the last and eased for a 4 1/2 lengths success in a conditions contest at Ripon.

As Red Mist was value for more than the winning margin, and regular rider Silvestre De Sousa clearly gets a great tune out of him, he should give Mjjack plenty to think about. For those reasons, he rates the main danger off a rating of 104 that may underestimate his ability.

Mankib another to consider each-way

With eight horses set to line-up, there’s each way betting interest here and Mankib represents connections that have all won the race before. Jockey Jim Crowley carried these colours home to victory last year with the useful Tabarrak, while trainer William Haggas triumphed in 2015 with Hathal.

This four-year-old son of Tamayuz is a French import who only joined his current handler in May, and was last of seven to the thriving Sir Dancealot in the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket on British debut the following month. Mankib bounced back from that to win by a neck over Top Score at this course and distance in a class 2 handicap next time out, however.

He also went in again, winning by the same margin, in a conditions race at Thirsk on his penultimate start. Although then a disappointing four-length ninth on the all-weather at Chelmsford, that was Mankib’s debut on the artificial surface and a return to the turf where he is four from eight should see him in a better light.

As he races off 103 – 1lb higher than when last successful – he ought to at least be involved in the finish and making the frame. With a 50 per cent strike rate at the trip, Mankib is therefore well worth an each-way wager among our 2018 Dubai Duty Free Cup betting tips.
