Fillies’ Mile betting tips: Antonia De Vega an appealing punt in Newmarket Group 1

The 2018 Fillies’ Mile Stakes betting tips given by Horsebetting.com say the exciting and unbeaten Antonia De Vega is worth a punt to land the spoils in the Group 1 juvenile contest at Newmarket on Friday, 12 October, and further enhance her Classic claims. Pretty Pollyanna is miles clear on ratings, so looks the obvious danger if staying having previously raced over no further than 6f. Aidan O’Brien has a terrific recent record in the race, so his upwardly mobile Hermosa is another with claims. Read our in-depth 2018 Fillies’ Mile betting tips preview for more details.

Antonia De Vega fancied for Fillies’ Mile glory

Antonia De Vega is an exciting prospect who looks worth a bet to take the step up into Group 1 company in her stride and land the spoils in the feature Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket on Friday (15:35). This Ralph Beckett trained juvenile is unbeaten in two outings and currently a top-price 20/1 in the ante post betting for next year’s 1000 Guineas.

In the first of those successes over 7f on the July course at this venue, the daughter of Lope De Vega landed an 11-runner contest in decisive fashion. After being held-up in mid-division by Harry Bentley, she was asked to make a move two from home and picked up nicely before staying on to take up the running inside the final 100 yards and win going away from Zagitova by 1 1/4 lengths.

Bentley only had to drive her out under a hand and heels ride to get the job done and score a shade cosily. The re-opposing runner-up has also come out and won since, finished third in a Group 2 and fourth in a Group 1 – so that gives the form a solid look.

Given the manner in which Antonia De Vega disposed that rival without being asked any serious question, it suggested that she was well above average and needed keeping firmly onside. That view was conformed when she landed the Group 3 Prestige Stakes over 7f at Goodwood.

Antonia De Vega seemed ill at ease on the undulating track and got outpaced two from home. She looked to be going nowhere, but once Bentley got her balanced she burst through between horses to beat Accordance by 1 1/4 lengths. She again won going away and the turn of foot on display was impressive.

It may not have been the most strongest renewal of that race, yet there was nothing not to like about the way in which she ultimately got the job done. Antonia De Vega is scopey sort who is still far from the finished article, but clearly has a huge engine and is sure to be suited by the step up to the 1m trip of this given how she has finished off her aforementioned races.

So, with the prospect of better to come, Antonia De Vega had to feature as the main punt in our 2018 Fillies’ Mile betting tips to land the hat-trick and further enhance her Classic claims.

Pretty Pollyanna clear on ratings

Pretty Pollyanna brings the strongest form into the race and looks the obvious danger – if staying. The Michael Bell trained daughter of Oasis Dream has won three of her five starts, while an official rating of 117 puts her 10lb and upwards clear of her seven rivals in this.

After landing an incident packed Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes over 6f on the July course here by seven lengths, she showed that runaway success to be no fluke when following-up in the Group 1 Prix Morny over the same trip at Deauville in France. Pretty Pollyanna again raced at the head of affairs and, after being challenged throughout the final furlong by Signora Cabello, showed real guts to dig deep and score by three-quarters of a length.

The runner-up is a smart sort who had won her previous four starts – including two Group 2s – and the form looks strong as the pair pulled four lengths clear of the field. Pretty Pollyanna was sent of the 6/4 favourite to land the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes over 6f at this venue on the back of that victory, but could finish only fourth of 11 to Fairyland.

However, different tactics were adopted that day and she was far from disgraced in being beaten 1 3/4 lengths. After breaking well, jockey Silvestre De Sousa decided to take a pull and drop in behind the leaders.

This was presumably to see if she would settle as regards future assignments, like this, over longer trips. As a result, she fought for her head before keeping on nicely inside the last to be nearest at the finish.

It was a puzzling run and one which still leaves a big question mark over whether Pretty Pollyanna will have the required stamina for this stiff mile. She has looked all speed, but connections clearly think there is a chance she will get it.

We are not convinced, however; so, for that reason alone, are keen to take her on. Given how far clear Pretty Pollyanna is of the field in this though, she had to feature among our 2018 Fillies’ Mile betting tips.

Hermosa the pick of O’Brien duo

All-conquering Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has won three of the last four renewals of this prestigious juvenile prize. He is represented by Hermosa and Zagitova. The former looks the pick of the pair, given the latter was has a mountain to climb to reverse form with Antonia De Vega on their aforementioned clash over 7f on the July course.

This daughter of Galileo opened her account at the second time of asking when landing a 13-runner maiden at Galway by a length. She then ran very well two starts later when third of 10 to Skitter Scatter in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes over 7f at The Curragh where, after being slowly away, she stayed on strongly to be nearest at the finish and beaten just over three lengths.

It as a fine effort given how the race panned out, and Hermosa has since landed a Group 2 over 7f at Naas in good style when keeping on strongly to beat Foxtrot Liv by 2 1/2 lengths. She is clearly on an upward curve and the way in which she has finished off her last two races suggests the extra furlong of this will be right up her street.

So, with further improvement looking assured, Hermosa looks well worth another crack at this level and has claims of making the frame at the very least. She thus features as the each-way play in our 2018 Fillies’ Mile betting tips preview.
