Futurity Trophy betting tips: Turgenev taken to win Doncaster feature

The 2018 Futurity Trophy betting tips from Horsebetting.com say Turgenev is a value bet to win the feature juvenile Group 1 contest at Doncaster over the straight mile on Saturday, 27 October. Irish master trainer Aidan O’Brien has won this race eight times before, so his Magna Grecia is well-respected and feared most. Great Scot, meanwhile, represents a trainer in-form in Tom Dascombe, so is worth an each-way bet. Turgenev fancied for Futurity Trophy under Frankie

Champion trainer John Gosden can round off the season in style with a first-ever winner of the Group 1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster on Saturday (16:05) courtesy of the progressive Turgenev. This son of super sire Dubawi is among the leading fancies for the feature juvenile contest on Town Moor this year and brings huge untapped potential to the table.

The Princess Haya owned colt has won twice easing down when stepped up to the mile of this since finishing second on debut at the Yorkshire venue to Royal Marine over 7f last month. Although beaten 2 1/4 lengths, Turgenev chased home a subsequent Group 1 winner at the Arc de Triomphe meeting over in France at Longchamp.

That Plus 10 race in which he made his bow has thrown up two other subsequent winners, including Turgenev’s stablemate Buffalo River, who was a short-head behind in third. As the front three pulled a further six lengths clear of the field, it looks very strong form.

Turgenev was a facile six-length winner next time out himself on the all-weather at Newcastle and value for more than the winning margin. Regular rider Frankie Dettori was then again able to push him clear in complete command on his most recent start at Newbury and ease him close home.

Connections have nowhere near got to the bottom of Turgenev after two unextended wins at the trip, and the fact he was giving weight all-round in the last of those is further evidence of that. This demands more but, with further improvement assured and trainer and jockey in such splendid form, he looks a value punt to take this big step up and land the spoils.

You can always question what horses beat when they win with style, but that debut run at the track more than stacks up. It’s for that reason, and the odds on offer, that Turgenev heads these 2018 Futurity Trophy betting tips for his high-profile connections.

Magna Grecia worthy of respect

The betting is headed by Magna Grecia, who leads the Irish charge after finishing a narrow runner-up in a Group 3 over the Rowley Mile at Newmarket when previously in action. Given trainer Aidan O’Brien has won this race eight times before, including last year’s renewal with Saxon Warrior, he commands plenty of respect.

Magna Grecia is by Invincible Spirit and a Galileo mare, so his breeding has emphasis on both speed and stamina. He made a winning debut over 7f at Naas on September 30 when scoring by a comfortable 3 1/2 lengths and connections pitched him straight into group company last time out.

As the Autumn Stakes is over the same course and distance as the 2000 Guineas, the form must be taken seriously and Magna Grecia engaged in a sustained duel with hotly fancied French raider Persian King at headquarters. Although staying on well, he just couldn’t get his head in front and went down by a neck.

Considering the winner had bolted up in his last two outings, this suggested Magna Grecia was the real deal. He is unexposed at the trip after just the one try over it and open to any amount of progress; however, he is plenty short enough at the prices available, and better value lies elsewhere.

With Magna Grecia looking too short, our 2018 Futurity Trophy betting tips recommend taking him on despite connections. O’Brien also has more than one hand in this race, and the visual impression created by Turgenev when winning with tons in hand makes him appeal more than the favourite.

Great Scot well worth considering each-way

Of those at bigger prices, Great Scot represents another in-form trainer and jockey combination of Tom Dascombe and Richard Kingscote. His form at Listed level is more than respectable; so, at the odds on offer looks worth an each-way punt now pitched in at the deep end.

Great Scot has won three of his four starts and was beaten just a head into third on his sole defeat on his first try over this trip when stepped up to it at Deauville. The way he previously ran on well over 7f on debut at Chester and then when scoring again by a cosy length at Haydock suggested the extra distance would suit.

There’s also the fact Great Scot was unlucky over in France when coming with a good challenge late on after being switched. He was closest at the finish and the runner-up, Duke Of Hazzard, who a just a short-head in front of him has come out and won since to frank the form.

That’s something Great Scot did himself when last in action and returning to Haydock to gain some compensation for his narrow Deauville defeat. He simply acted best in the tough conditions, racing keenly throughout to land the Ascendant Stakes by two lengths.

While this obviously demands more, Great Scot’s trainer and jockey are both operating at a strike rate of more than 20 per cent in the last fortnight at the time of writing. At a double figure price he looks capable out of outrunning his odds and making the frame, so is the value each-way bet on offer in these 2018 Futurity Trophy betting tips.
