Mustashry has plenty going for him in Gala Stakes

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute has his team in flying form and Mustashry looks worth a bet to provide him with another winner in the Listed 1m 2f Gala Stakes at Sandown on Friday, 6 July (15:30).

The gelding improved throughout last season and has a good strike rate having won four of his 11 starts. Following a promising reappearance run at Goodwood, the son of Tamayuz put in a stunning display when landing a competitive 13-runner handicap at Chelmsford.

After being held-up well off the pace, he showed a devastating turn of foot to swoop out wide and get up to cosily beat Masham Star by half-a-length. Mustashry then took the step up into Group 3 company in his stride when only having to be driven out to beat Forest Ranger by three-quarters of a length in the 1m 1f Strensall Stakes at York.

Although he then disappointed on the final start of the campaign when a well-beaten seventh of eight in a Group 2 at Newmarket, that run can be excused as the going was soft and Mustashry needs quick ground to be seen to best effect.

He gets that here and this represents a drop in class. An official rating of 112 makes him the highest in the line-up and gives Mustashry 2lb and upwards in hand on his rivals.

It makes him the one to beat, especially on his success in the Strensall. The five-year-old is lightly-raced for his age and still open to more improvement for a yard that has a tremendous record with similar types.

Euginio the main danger

Euginio is the joint-second highest on official ratings to Mustashry and looks the obvious danger following three solid placed efforts this season. This Richard Hannon trained four-year-old ran very well on return to action when a staying on 2 1/2 lengths third to Forest Ranger in the Group 3 Earl Of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket.

The winner has since gone on to land a Group 2 at Chester to give the form a boost. Euginio backed that up with a decent second in a Listed contest at Goodwood, where the 1m 4f trip seemed to stretch his stamina to the limit, before going down by just a length last time out when second of 16 to Monarchs Glen in the Listed Wolferton Stakes over 1m 2f at Royal Ascot.

He led at the furlong marker in the latter and rallied strongly when headed without being able to match the pace of the winner. It was a gutsy effort and Euginio showed a likeable attitude.

The son of Fastnet Rock is clearly in good heart at present, while another plus is that he’s a course and distance winner. With Mustashry also having his first start of the season, Euginio has fitness on his side and looks the one to capitalise if that rival is a bit ring rusty.

Morando odds appeal each-way

Morando finished behind Euginio when a slightly disappointing 11th in the Wolferton, but looks a big player if bouncing back judged on his seasonal reappearance run.

That came in the Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown where after racing keenly early doors he stayed on strongly near the finish to be beaten 1 1/4 lengths into third behind Crystal Ocean.

The winner is a high class sort who has since gone on to land a Group 3 at Newbury and the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot. Almodovar, who finished three-quarters of a length behind Morando in fourth, also ran a cracker next time up when second in a Group 1 at Longchamp.

That gives the form a strong look in relation to this contest and makes the Andrew Balding trained Moranado command the utmost respect. So, at the odds on offer, he looks the each-way play in the race.
