Hakeem appeals most for London Mile Handicap series final

Trainer William Haggas looks to have a leading candidate for the London Mile Handicap series final at Kempton on Saturday (15:15) in the form of Hakeem. The four-year-old gelding is owned by Sheikh Hamdam Al Maktoum and was won two of his five starts so far this season.

This son of Exceed And Excel scored on his all-weather debut at Southwell in May when landing a 1m novice stakes contest. He was then stepped markedly up in class for the Whitsun Cup at Sandown and ran a below par ninth to Chiefofchiefs when beaten 11 1/2 lengths.

Hakeem showed that outing to be all wrong, however, by placing next time up in a similar grade affair at Haydock. He finally landed a handicap on his penultimate start when dropping back to 7f on Newmarket’s July Course when value for more than the winning margin of a head over Rogue.

What makes Hakeem appeal for this, however, was his performance over course and distance last time out when runner-up to the re-opposing Honey Man, who has been a strong favourite for this. He stuck to the task well and chased home winner going down by three-quarters of a length.

That form and the revised terms from it look to be key to solving this puzzle as Hakeem now meets Honey Man on 3lb better terms. While Simon Crisford’s three-year-old is in good form too, he’s got a 6lb ratings hike to overcome and for that reason it’s Hakeem who looks the best value among our 2018 London Mile Handicap betting tips.

Lawmaking looks dangerous and each-way value

With Honey Man plenty short enough in the betting, there are dangers everywhere and one of those that looks a solid each-way punt here is the Michael Scudamore trained Lawmaking. The five-year-old gelding comes back to Kempton at the top of his game, having won and finished fourth in two starts over course and distance at Sunbury on Thames venue this term.

It has taken his current handler a little while to unlock Lawmaking’s potential after he joined Scudamore from Henry Spiller this year. On his third start for the yard, he just held off perennial runner-up Ptarmigan Ridge after being driven to lead inside the final 150 yards.

Lawmaking then followed up under top-weight with a more comfortable victory on the all-weather at Newcastle, before returning to Kempton to contest the same race as Hakeem and Honey Man. Although beaten just two lengths into fourth, he is able to run in this off the same mark of 86.

As his rivals at the heading of the betting have their ratings increased by the assessor, that gives Lawmaking every chance from a handicapping perspective. With so little to find on Hakeem and Honey Man, he has to be taken seriously and rates a solid each-way bet in a race where a case can be made for most.

Gossiping also worth a go each-way

Another one to consider at bigger odds is the Gary Moore trained gelding Gossiping, who encountered all sorts of trouble in-running during this race last year. Although finishing 10th in that renewal, he did make some eye-catching headway before the final furlong when denied a clear passage.

Gossiping was only beaten 4 3/4 lengths, so in the circumstances he was far from disgraced. Although on a long losing run having last scored at Goodwood in May 2017, this son of Dubawi ran well on his second start of this season when again hampered and runner-up in a class 2 handicap over an extended 7f at Chester.

While Gossiping clearly hasn’t been the most straightforward, he is capable of putting in big performances. He shaped far better than the bare result suggests when seventh to Medahim in a Glorious Goodwood handicap on his penultimate start, as he was only beaten three lengths.

When prepping for this in the race won by Honey Man over course and distance last time out, Gossiping tried to do too much too soon and didn’t have anything left in the tank at the business end. If the cards drop right for him, then he has to have a shout of making the frame, especially as he goes here off 15lb lower than 12 months ago.

That makes Gossiping look very well treated and his current all-weather mark is just 1lb higher than when last successful on an artificial surface. Taking all that into account, he is another each-way bet to consider from these 2018 London Mile Handicap betting tips and punters should be looking out for extra places from bookmakers on this race.
