Ten Sovereigns impossible to oppose in Middle Park Stakes

Ten Sovereigns looks a cut above his rivals and a worthy odds-on favourite to land the feature juvenile contest at Newmarket on Saturday, the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes (15:00). This colt hails hails from all all-conquering yard of Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien, who has won the 6f race a record five times courtesy of Minardi (2000), Johannesburg (2001), Ad Valorem (2004), Crusade (2011), and U S Navy Flag (2017).

In Ten Sovereigns, he has a colt who has looked a potential superstar in winning his two starts to date. In the first of those (a 25-runner maiden at The Curragh), he put in a sensational display when romping to a seven-length success. After taking up the running two from home, the son of No Nay Never forged clear without being asked a serious question to win with any amount in hand.

It was a performance which oozed class and, given that O’Brien’s juveniles tend to need their first run, one which suggested he could be something very special. That view was confirmed when he took the step up into Group 3 company in his stride to land the Round Tower Stakes at the same venue with real authority.

After breaking well, Ten Sovereigns travelled ominously well before being produced to take up the running two from home. When pushed along to assert by Donnacha O’Brien, the response was immediate and he drew readily cleat to beat Bruce Wayne by 3 3/4 lengths.

Given the ease of that success, and that of his maiden win, it’s worth noting that he produced rapid sectionals in the last couple of furlongs of each. It suggests he has a huge engine and is a Classic contender in the making. The bookmakers agree as Ten Sovereigns is currently a top-price 8/1 joint second-favourite in the ante post betting for next year’s 2000 Guineas.

He looks the real deal and handler O’Brien has made no secret of the high regard in which this two-year-old is held. Ten Sovereigns looks destined for the top and impossible to oppose, so is fully expected to take this en route to much better things.

Jash feared most for in-form Crisford

Trainer Simon Crisford is operating at a strike rate of 38 per cent in the last 14 days at the time of writing. He saddles Jash who is also unbeaten in two starts – winning by an aggregate of just under seven lengths – and looks the obvious one to give Ten Sovereigns a race.

This son of Kodiac showed a tremendous turn of foot on debut here when beating Dazzling Dan by 4 1/2 lengths. He then blew away the opposition when following-up in eight-runner contest at Salisbury earlier in the month.

After racing keenly in the early stages, jockey Jim Crowley allowed him to take up the running after two furlongs. Jash then tanked along at the head of affairs and drew readily clear from the furlong marker to easily beat Ginger Fox by nine lengths.

Judged on the manner of those successes, Jash could be anything and looks well worth a crack at this level. The one question mark is whether he will settle, as he has tended to race a bit freely in both his starts to date and this is a stiff track.

He does, however, have a very able pilot in the saddle in the shape of Crowley who steered him to his facile success last time out. So, should Ten Sovereigns fail to live up to expectations, Jash looks the most likely one to pick up the pieces. Thus he features as the main danger to O’Brien’s charge in our 2018 Middle Park Stakes betting tips.

Emaraaty Ana an each-way option

Of those at bigger odds, Emaraaty Ana makes plenty of each-way appeal. This Kevin Ryan trained colt has won two of his three starts and comes into the contest on the back of a career-best performance when landing the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York in gutsy fashion.

The son of Shamardal made most in the hands of Frankie Dettori and stayed on gamely when challenged throughout the final furlong to hold on tenaciously and beat Legends Of war by half-a-length. It was a most taking display, despite the fact that on paper it didn’t look a strong renewal of the race.

Prior to that, Emaraaty Ana had beaten Blow By Wind by 2 1/4 lengths on debut at Windsor. The runner-up has won twice since and ran well when seventh to Calyx in the Coventry Stakes, with that front pair also pulling six lengths clear of the third home to give the form a solid look. He was then far from disgraced when keeping on 2 1/4 lengths third to Natalie’s Joy in a Listed contest at Hamilton.

Emaraaty Ana has shown improved form on each outing and is clearly going the right way. He still looks far from the finished article, so should have more to offer. It that proves to be the case he should be up to making his presence in this and has every chance of hitting the frame.
