Newbury betting tips: Magic Of Light can shine for Jessie in Mares' Chase

Newbury Mares’ Chase betting tips from Horsebetting.com say Irish raider Magic Of Light is worth a wager to land the extended 2m 7f feature contest at the Berkshire venue on Wednesday, 19 December. The Colin Tizzard trained Drinks Interval is the highest rated in the line-up, so is feared most. Pearl Royale scored in good style last time out and is another with claims in a small field but competitive renewal. Irish raider Magic Of Light the answer to Newbury feature

Irish raider Magic Of Light looks to hold outstanding claims of landing the feature race at Newbury on Wednesday, the Listed 2m 7f Newbury Mares’ Chase (14:15). This Jessica Harrington trained seven-year-old has won twice and posted some solid efforts in defeat to also be placed five times over the larger obstacles.

They include when an eight-length second to Dinaria Des Obeaux in a Grade 2 mares’ novice chase at Thurles back in January. Magic of Light went on to round off the campaign with a gutsy display when staying on strongly for pressure to beat Goodthynemilan in a competitive 15-runner Grade B handicap at the Punchestown Festival.

That was a terrific effort giving a whole stone away to the runner-up, and one which suggested there were plenty of races to be won this season with the daughter of Flemensfirth. That view was confirmed on return to action when she ran a cracker to finish third of 25 to Tout Est Permis in the valuable Troytown Handicap Chase at Navan last month.

Great run in Troytown

Magic Of Light raced at the head of affairs and, after a mistake four from home, got headed two out. She then rallied and stuck to the task well to go down by 11 lengths in what was a typically hot and competitive renewal.

It was a fine effort and one which commands her the utmost respect in this now pitched back against her own sex. The form of her aforementioned run behind Dinaria Des Obeaux also reads really well in the contest of this lower grade affair.

So, with ground conditions holding no fears, and regular pilot Robbie Power once again in the saddle, there is nothing not to like about Magic Of Light’s profile for this. Hence she had to be the main selection in our 2018 Newbury Mares’ Chase betting tips.

Top rated Drinks Interval feared most

The Colin Tizzard trained Drinks Interval was a fairly useful hurdler who has taken her form to a new level since being chasing. This six-year-old daughter of King’s Theatre is three from five over the larger obstacles and officially the highest rated in the line-up –  so looks the obvious danger to Magic Of Light.

In the first of those on chase debut she at Newton Abbot over 2m 5f, she stayed on strongly to beat The Unit by 1 3/4 lengths. Drinks Interval then lost little in defeat when runner-up to that rival at the same venue, before resuming winning ways in fine style when jumping for fun and making virtually all to easily beat Sky Pirate by 4 1/2 lengths at Uttoxeter.

Progressive mare

She then bolted up by 11 lengths at Chepstow when again putting in a fine round of jumping. Connections decided to pitch Drinks Interval into Listed company on the back of that runaway victory, and she was still a length up and seemingly going well when coming to grief three from home in a race eventually won by Rons Dream at Market Rasen.

It was too early to say if she would have won had she stayed on her feet, but Drinks Interval had yet to be asked a serious question. Providing she is none the worse for that tumble, she looks a massive player in this judged on her previous progressive form over fences.

Indeed, a rating of 147 puts her 6lb and upwards clear of her four rivals. That makes Drinks Interval the one to beat and champion jockey Richard Johnson, who is 2-2 on her, is now back in the plate. A bold bid looks assured and as, she gets 4lb from Magic Of Light, she’s thus expected to give that one most to think about.

Progressive Pearl Royale another with claims

Pearl Royale is another with a progressive profile who cannot be ruled out in what is a competitive renewal – despite the fact that only five are set to go to post. This Nigel Hawke trained daughter of Robin Des Champs has won two of her three starts over fences and comes into the race on the back of a career-best performance.

That came in a three-runner Listed contest at Carlisle where the six-year-old made all to beat Rons Dream by six lengths. Pearl Royale idled on the stiff uphill finish, but never looked like getting caught and was always firmly in command.

She was value for more than the winning margin, and it was a most taking and dominant display which suggested there were plenty more races to be won with this lightly-raced sort. Pearl Royale is clearly going the right way, but the one concern is that she could get locked in a duel with Drinks Interval as both like to make the running.

That could set it up for a closer like Magic Light who will be content to sit in-behind and pounce late. However, if Pearl Royale can get loose on the front end, she could prove a tough nut to crack. She is also the closest to Drinks Interval on ratings, so holds obvious claims and is thus another to consider in a trappy affair and completes our 2018 Newbury Mares’ Chase betting tips.
