Newmarket betting tips: Star Rock and Unforgetable Filly among Friday fancies

Horsebetting.com experts give their three best bets for the second day of Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting on Friday, 28 September. Star Rock, who is unbeaten in two starts over course and distance, rates the NAP on the seven-race card in the 1m 4f Group 2 Princess Royal Stakes. Unforgetable Filly was ultra-impressive when winning by a wide margin last time out, so is our NB in the Listed 1m Rosemary Stakes that gets proceedings underway. Meanwhile, in the Silver Cambridgeshire, Al Moreb makes plenty of each-way appeal for this 1m 1f handicap. Star holds Rock solid claims in Princess Royal Stakes

Star Rock ran a cracker when third last time out, so is strongly fancied to take advantage of a drop in grade to land the spoils and get back to winning ways in the Group 2 Princess Royal Stakes at Newmarket on Friday (14:25) – a 1m 4f contest for fillies and mares.

That run came in the similar grade 1m 6f Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood where the Hughie Morrison trained four-year-old was third and beaten just a length by Pilaster. She was arguably an unlucky loser.

After being held-up well off the pace, the daughter of Fastnet Rock was making good headway to challenge the leaders two from home when getting badly bumped. She lost vital momentum as a result but once gathered up again finished off strongly to be gaining all the way to the line.

Given how the race panned out, it was a cracking effort and the form has a really strong look to it in the context of this contest as the runner-up Maid Up has since landed a Group 3. God Given who was fourth, meanwhile, won the Group 2 Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting earlier this month.

It sends the standard and another big plus is that Star Rock in unbeaten in two starts over this course and distance. Morrison has also been back among the winners of late and the booking of red-hot jockey Oisin Murphy to partner her for the first time is an eye-catching one.

He has a strike rate of just under 20 per cent when teaming up with the yard in the past 12 months, so connections clearly mean business. Star Rock also came good at this time last season when winning twice, so looks to have the perfect profile for this. We therefore had no hesitation in making her the standout punt among the Newmarket betting tips for September 28.

Unforgetable Filly looks tasty in Rosemary Stakes

In the Listed 1m Rosemary Stakes that gets proceedings underway (13:50), Unforgetable Filly looks the one to be on following an ultra-impressive success last time out. This Hugo Palmer trained four-year-old bounced back to form in no uncertain fashion at Haydock when slamming New Day Dawn by eight lengths in the similar grade and distance Dick Hern Stakes.

The daughter of Sepoy lost vital ground when slowly-away, but jockey Ben Curtis didn’t panic and gave her plenty of time to recover and catch-up. Unforgetable filly then made smooth headway from mid-division two from home to take up the running at the furlong marker.

When Curtis then asked her to go about her business, the response was immediate and she forged clear to win with any amount in hand. Unforgetable Filly had Queen Of Time and Agrotera, who came third and fourth respectively, a further 1 1/2 lengths and 3 1/4 lengths in-behind, so has nothing to fear from that re-opposing pair.

Laugh Aloud, who won this in 2016, has also failed to fire in two starts this season – so Unforgetable Filly is clearly the one to beat if turning up in the same form. It’s also worth remembering that she landed last year’s German 1000 Guineas at Dusseldorf, so she is clearly a very talented sort.

Unforgetable filly is also the highest rated in the line-up off 116 and has a 30 per cent strike rate over the trip, having won three of her six starts over it. There is simply nothing not to like about her chances in this, so she therefore rates our next best bet on the seven-race card.

Al Moreb appeals each-way in Silver Cambridgeshire

In the Silver Cambridgeshire (17:15), Al Moreb makes plenty of each-way appeal in what is a typically ultra-competitive 1m 1f handicap in which 20 are set to go to post. This Richard Hannon trained gelding comes into the race on the back of two solid efforts and looks nicely treated on the pick of his form.

In the first of those over 1m at Newbury, the four-year-old stayed on to be beaten two lengths into third by Breden. He now meets the winner on 3lb better terms and that should be enough to see him gain revenge as Al Moreb went into that contest on the back of a break.

The son of Raven’s Pass has since finished a fine 1 1/4 lengths third of 12 to Dubai Destination over 1m 2f at Sandown. He made good headway to take up the running two from home that day and, after getting headed inside the last, weakened late on to lose second place close home.

Al Moreb has nothing to fear from the re-opposing fifth History Writer and had a couple of subsequent winners in the shape of Communique and Master Carpenter in-behind, so that gives the form a solid look. The drop back down to 1m 1f also looks sure to suit and a mark of 90 means he’s running off a rating just 3lb higher than when last successful.

It gives him every chance from a handicapping perspective. So, with some bookmakers offering enhanced place terms, Al Moreb had to be the each-way punt in our Newmarket betting tips for September 28.
