Sharp Response the Catterick choice in North Yorkshire Grand National

Local trainer Sue Smith has won the last three renewals of the North Yorkshire Grand National, so Sharp Response looks well worth a wager to enhance that record in the 3m 6f feature handicap chase at Catterick on Thursday (14:45). This eight-year-old son of Oscar brings the strongest form into the class 3 contest, but must carry top weight as a result.

Although Sharp Response has won just two of his eight starts over fences, that does not tell the whole story as he has run solid races in defeat at a much higher level than this. The drop in class is easily one he could cash-in on and his progressive form as a novice in this sphere from last season stands up.

After finishing seventh at Uttoxeter to Sir Ivan on his chasing bow, Sharp Response was beaten just 4 1/2 lengths into third by Mister Whitaker at Carlisle. The winner has since landed two Listed contests – including one at the Cheltenham Festival – and finished a fine fourth in the BetVictor Gold Cup.

That is strong form in relation to this lower class affair, and Sharp Response chased home Bordeaux Bill at Wetherby before recording a fine course win over 3m 1f here in February. After then shaping as if needing his reappearance run, he went in again scoring by nine lengths in a class 3 handicap chase over 3m 2f back at Carlisle off 124.

Performed well at a higher level

Sharp Response was then far from disgraced when eighth in a Grade 3 staying handicap at Cheltenham to Rock The Kasbah. He was pitched right in at the deep end against established stayers and seasoned handicappers, so this was a solid effort in the circumstances.

When eased in grade to Listed level for the Rehearsal Handicap Chase off 1lb lower than his current mark at Newcastle, Sharp Response kept on well to go down by four lengths and finish fourth to Lake View Lad. The winner has since confirmed the form with the runner-up Captain Chaos by scoring by four lengths in the Grade 3 Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase.

Although then staying on into a 19-length fourth behind Daklondike on heavy ground in a class 2 Haydock handicap last time out, the assessor has reduced Sharp Response 1lb to an official rating of 134. While it’s the highest in this line-up, the stable’s fine recent record in the race includes winners rated 131 and 132.

As he’s again dropped in class, this looks a great opportunity for Sharp Response to resume winning ways under Danny Cook. With underfoot conditions sure to suit based on his ready Carlisle success and his leading form claims, he’s thus put up as the main selection in our 2019 North Yorkshire Grand National betting tips.

Same Circus feared most

In-form jockey Brian Hughes has ridden winners of this before, and he teams up with Donald McCain on Same Circus, who is feared most on official figures. The eight-year-old mare caught the handicapper’s eye when winning at this level last time out.

Same Circus has won three of her eight chase starts and placed on two other occasions, scoring on both the hurdles and chase course here. She also showed progressive form last season when winning off top weight at the fifth time of asking over 3m 2f at the North Yorkshire venue off 120, before following-up at Bangor when getting 10lb from Rons Dream.

Although the runner-up readily reversed the form off level weights in a subsequent Listed contest at Perth, that one is an above average mare who has since placed fourth in the Welsh Grand National at Chepstow. Same Circus has taken time to come to the boil this season, meanwhile, resuming winning ways third time up back at Bangor when scoring by three lengths despite giving nearly a stone away to the runner-up.

The assessor has had his say for that victory and she’s up 7lb in this as a result but, with Hughes on a better than 20 per cent strike rate in the last 14 days at the time of writing, the hike may not be enough to stop her going in again. Same Circus is thus the one who, according to our 2019 North Yorkshire Grand National betting tips, can give Sharp Response most to think about.

Little Bruce an each-way alternative

Another local handler Philip Kirby is bang in-form, so his Little Bruce cannot be ruled out either. This seven-year-old son of Ascot Gold Cup legend Yeats is still unexposed over fences after just five starts and has a 40 per cent win and place ratio in chases.

After finishing fourth on his chasing bow at Hexham in May and having the summer off, he made a winning return to action at the Northumbria venue in a class 4 novice handicap in November. Little Bruce made all in comfortable fashion off 107, and then failed to complete outings at Haydock and Wetherby.

There was lots to like about his run last time out when a two-length runner-up to Skipthescales at Newcastle, however. Little Bruce found more when headed after four out, rallying to regain the lead in-between the last two fences and just went down in the final 50 yards.

Different tactics may be called for here as he steps markedly up in trip, but Nathan Moscrop is again aboard and takes a valuable 5lb off with his claim. Taking that into account, he is only 2lb higher than the mark Little Bruce got put up to for winning at Hexham. He thus looks a possible each-way alternative to consider in our 2019 North Yorkshire Grand National betting tips.
