Troytown Handicap Chase betting tips: Out Sam the punt in Navan feature

The 2018 Troytown Handicap Chase betting tips given by Horsebetting.com say Out Sam is worth a bet to provide trainer Gordon Elliott a fifth consecutive winner of the 3m feature contest at Navan on Sunday, 25 November. Spider Web comes into the race on the back of a career-best performance and rates the main danger. Squouateur, meanwhile, is another interesting and potentially well-weighted contender for Elliott, so appeals each-way. Out Sam the Troytown choice

The feature race at Navan on Sunday is the Grade B Troytown Handicap Chase (14:30) and Out Sam looks to hold leading claims of providing trainer Gordon Elliott with a fifth consecutive winner of the valuable 3m contest. This nine-year-old is a three-time winner over fences and bounced right back to his best when scoring in determined fashion last time out.

That win came in the 20-runner Cork Grand National where he beat Rogue Angel by 1 3/4 lengths. After racing in mid-division in the hands of a confident Davy Russell, the son of Multiplex made stealthy headway to take up the running two from home where he made a mistake.

Russell quickly gathered him up and, after a good leap at the last, he stayed on strongly on the run in to win going away. Out Sam looked value for more than the winning margin, so an 8lb rise in the weights may not be enough to stop him going in again.

His revised chase rating of 140 is a career-high, but he was placed in the past off 136 when trained by Warren Greatrex and was sent off a heavily-backed 13/2 favourite for the 2017 running of the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival when seventh of 23 to Un Temps Pour Tout off 139.

Now that Elliott has found the key to him and got him back on track, Out Sam looks the type to keep onside in this type of contest. He has also improved since being fitted with the combination of a tongue-tie and visor, winning one and being placed twice in his last three starts.

Out Sam is also versatile as regards ground and once again has the services of the ice cool Russell in the saddle. He looks to have the perfect profile for this and therefore had to be the main selection in our 2018 Troytown Handicap Chase betting tips.

Spider Web sure to make a bold bid

In a typically wide-open and fierce renewal where a case can be made for most, Spider Web appeals as the type to go very close. Trained by Thomas Mullins, this JP McManus owned seven-year-old has won five of his 19 starts over fences and is one from one over the trip.

Following a break, the gelding produced a a career-best when landing the 16-runner Munster National at Limerick last month. After racing at the rear well off the pace and making a couple of costly errors, Spider Web then really started warming to the task.

Having made stealthy headway through the pack two from home, he still looked to have plenty to do when jumping the last in fourth. However, the son of Presenting then responded really generously to Luke Dempsey’s urgings and dug deep for pressure to power home and beat Na Trachtalain Abu.

There was lots to like about the way in which Spider Web got the job done and he clearly relished the step up to 3m trip of this for the first time. The assessor has been a bit harsh in raising him 8lb for that battling success, but the gelding has the scope to do better and has a nice racing weight of 10st 9lb.

Spider Web also hails from a shrewd outfit who are not adverse to landing a punt. He looks sure to make a bold bid to land back-to-back races; so, with many bookmakers offering enhanced place terms, makes plenty of each-way appeal and also features among our 2018 Troytown Handicap Chase betting tips.

Squouateur another contender for Elliott

County Meath-based handler Elliott is literally mob handed here, saddling an incredible 12 of the 25 runners. Among them is Squouateur – a seven-year-old also owned by legendary gambler McManus that developed into a smart hurdler in 2015-16 when winning three of his seven starts.

He also ran well when sent off the heavily-backed 9/4 favourite and finishing a staying on seventh of 24 to Ibis De Rheu in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival off a mark of 141. The winner has belatedly won over fences recently, and that’s worth bearing in mind as is this useful back form.

Although Squouateur is yet to get his head in front in a dozen chase starts, he has often shaped far better than the bare results. They include when staying on late to finish a never nearer 8 1/4 lengths third of 28 to Anibale Fly in last year’s Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown off a mark of 122. The winner later placed third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and fourth in the Grand National at Aintree.

Squouateur also ran very well when a 5 1/2 lengths third of 20 to Missed Approach in the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival back in March off 135. Those efforts suggest that his current mark of 138 is exploitable, and the son of Martaline definitely has a big pot in him.

His hold-up run style does mean that things have to drop right, but Barry Geraghty has a 50 per cent strike rate on him (two wins and a place from four starts) and is once again in the saddle. So, at the odds on offer, Squouateur had to feature as an each-way punt and completes our 2018 Troytown Handicap Chase betting tips.
