Wednesday at the York Ebor Festival
There are three races with Group status on the opening day of the Ebor Festival. First of all, there is the 7f Group 3 Acomb Stakes for juveniles. Subsequent Dante winner Saratoga Springs, and Classic scorers King’s Best, Rule Of Law and Phoenix Of Spain won this race.
The Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes, meanwhile, is a key St Leger trial over 1m 4f. Open to three-year-old colts and geldings only, the likes of Alleged, Rainbow Quest, Fantastic Light, Milan and Cracksman have all won it. John Gosden has trained five Great Voltigeur winners since 2007.
And the feature race is the 1m 2f Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes that sees three-year-olds take on their elders on the Knavesmire. Past winners include Dahlia, Comanche Run, Rodrigo de Triano, Ezzoud, Hailing, Singspiel, Giant’s Causeway, Authorized, Sea The Stars and Frankel. Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O’Brien have both trained six winners each.
Thursday at the York Ebor Festival
Supporting three black type races on Ladies Day of the Ebor Festival are a valuable sales race in the 6f Premier Yearlings Stakes for juveniles, and the 1m Clipper Logistics Heritage Handicap. The 6f Group 2 Lowther Stakes for juvenile fillies was most famously won by the prolific Russian Rhythm in 2002.
Meanwhile, the Listed 1m 4f Galtres Stakes for fillies and mares aged three and up was used in 2019 as a stepping stone to the Irish St Leger by Search For A Song. This race has carried the name of legendary trainer Sir Henry Cecil since 2014.
The Group 1 Yorkshire over the same course and distance is the feature event. First run in 1849, and opened up to older fillies and mares in 1991, Enable became just the third horse in history to win this more than once in 2019. The others are Only Royale and Islington.
Friday at the York Ebor Festival
There are three more Group races on the penultimate day of the Ebor Festival. The Group 2 Lonsdale Cup over about 2m tests the stamina of Flat stayers on the Knavesmire with Stradivarius becoming the latest of six multiple winners of this race in 2019, joining the likes of Further Flight and Persian Punch.
Some true equine greats have won the 6f Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes for colts and geldings down the years. Think Black Tarquin, Mill Reef, Rock of Gibraltar and Blue Point. First run in 1846, it is another of historic races you will find York Ebor betting on.
And the feature race on the Friday is the all-age Group 1 sprint, the Nunthorpe Stakes over the flying 5f. First held in its current format in 1922, legendary sprinters like Sharpo, Dayjur, Pivotal, Kyllachy, Oasis Dream and Mecca’s Angel all feature on the roll of honour.
Saturday at the York Ebor Festival
With three black type races and two Heritage Handicaps on the card, York Ebor online betting reaches its zenith on the fourth and final day of the Festival. The Listed 5f Roses Stakes is a sprint contest for juveniles, while the 1m 6f Melrose Handicap for three-year-olds is now part of the programme because the big race is no longer open to horses in that age bracket.
There are two Group races on Ebor day over somewhat specialist distances. Echo Of Light is the only dual winner of the 1m 1f Group 3 Strensall Stakes. The 7f City Of York Stakes, meanwhile, was upgraded to Group 2 status in 2019.
And finally, there is the Ebor Handicap itself. A Heritage Handicap over 1m 6f open to horses aged four and above, it was first run in 1843 with Sea Pigeon and Further Flight by far the most famous winners. This is one of the biggest Flat betting races of the entire summer.
