Glorious Goodwood day 5 betting tips – First Folio fancied
In the Stewards’ Sprint Handicap over 6f which kicks the card off (13:55), FIRST FOLIO was unlucky not to make the cut for the Stewards’ Cup. His connections will be out for compensation in the consolation race instead. Trained in Newmarket by James Ferguson, this three-year-old Dark Angel gelding has been progressive this season.
Although he didn’t win when trained in France by Henri-Francois Devin, that didn’t stop First Folio making a successful handicap debut on his UK start at Yarmouth. That came on reappearance off an opening mark of 80. First Folio was only fifth at Newmarket on his second outing for the stable, yet upset in the stalls. That meant he was slowly away, so a line can be put through that effort.
First Folio then resumed winning ways in a Heritage Handicap at York last month. Despite again dwelling at the start, he made steady and menacing headway going very easily with two furlongs of the Knavesmire to go. He only needed shaking up to lead approaching the last and kept on well for a 1 1/4 lengths victory over Blackrod.
As the runner-up has since scored in Heritage Handicap company at the Newmarket July Festival since, the form looks strong. Despite a further 8lb rise to 98 and topweight, that may not stop First Folio from going in again. It’s a shame that he hasn’t snuck into the Stewards’ Cup, but can lay a major marker down here instead. First Folio is an 11/2 chance with William Hill for this consolation race instead.

Summer Handicap betting tips – Prince Alex the punt
In the 1m 6f Summer Handicap (14:30), bottom weight PRINCE ALEX is one to consider each-way. This former inmate of the Ralph Beckett stable is now trained by Michael Bell. The four-year-old Excelebration gelding was an unlucky loser over course and distance on his penultimate start. Prince Alex was only denied by a head by re-opposing rival Nuits St Georges.
He finished the race off strongly, but just couldn’t reach the winner. Prince Alex now meets that one off 6lb better terms. On soft ground, that gives him every chance of turning the tables for all David Menuisier’s runner has gone in again since. Prince Alex relished some cut in the ground last season when notching a five-timer. He scored at Windsor off a lowly mark of 63 when starting off that winning sequence.
Prince Alex then followed-up at Beverley, Leicester, Haydock and finally York. Those last two successes were over this trip with the latter in Heritage Handicap company. It also took four runs to bring Prince Alex to full fitness last season, and he’s got three starts for the current campaign under his belt coming into this.
The good to firm ground he encountered in the Bet365 Trophy at Newmarket during the July Festival didn’t suit Prince Alex. Now back on softer ground, he can give a much better account of himself. Prince Alex also looks value in relation to Nuits St Georges at the odds on offer. It doesn’t make sense that he is twice the price of his rival off these terms. Therefore, the 10/1 with BetVictor, who pay four places, about Prince Alex is well worth taking each-way.
Lillie Langtry Stakes betting tips – Believe In Love each-way value
Finally, in the 1m 6f Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes (15:05), our Glorious Goodwood day 5 betting tips suggest BELIEVE IN LOVE looks a value alternative to odds-on favourite Wonderful Tonight. I fully expect Menuisier’s star filly to take this en route to bigger and better things, but was also taken with how the Roger Varian trained four-year-old defied a welter burden at Leopardstown last time out.
Believe In Love has won in Group 3 company at Saint-Cloud on heavy going, but also handles a sounder surface. That versatility as regards ground is a major plus with showers forecast. Whether they hit Goodwood or not remains to be seen. The daughter of Make Believe is a course winner from last season too, so handles the track.
As Believe In Love won the Stanerra Stakes under a penalty, carrying 10st, on her last outing, there is lots to like about her attitude. She beat an out-and-out stayer in Federica Sophia that day. This demands more but there is each-way value in the 10/1 on offer with Bet365 as a play against Wonderful Tonight. It wouldn’t surprise me if Albaflora shaped better now stepping up in trip too.
I’ve also backed Aidan O’Brien three-year-old Divinely each-way as she gets 15lb in weight for age and a penalty from the favourite. That brings her into the equation too, especially as she has shaped like going up in trip will suit in the Irish Oaks last time out. Believe In Love’s weight carrying performance just shades it for me, though, and she completes the Glorious Goodwood day 5 betting tips this year.
