Goodwood Betting Tips · Wednesday, 28th Jul 2021 - 13:50

Sussex Stakes day at the Qatar Goodwood Festival is this Wednesday with Glorious Goodwood day 2 betting tips available for this card at the meeting. Our experts have three each-way plays you should consider from the best of the action. Read all about these selections below.

Glorious Goodwood day 2 betting tips – Annandale appeals in opener

ANNANDALE has been knocking on the door in handicaps of late, so looks worth backing each-way in the 1m 4f 15 To Go Handicap that kicks things off (13:50). Trained by Mark Johnston, this Australia gelding has hit the frame on each of his last three starts including off a higher rating. That shows his consistency.

Although Annandale has only won at Nottingham this season, that doesn’t tell the full story. He ran a free-racing third in the Edinburgh Cup at Musselburgh off 84, then filled the same spot at Chester. Annandale seemed to appreciate a step up in trip there and was only held a neck last time out in the Young Stayers Handicap at Sandown.

The front two pulled 6 1/2 lengths clear of the third, so that form looks good. Annandale has also won with some cut in the ground as a juvenile, so a softer surface won’t inconvenience him. The step back down in trip shouldn’t be a problem either as this is a big field with a strong pace assured.

Joe Fanning now takes the ride for the first time after landing a double at Newmarket over the weekend. The Johnston yard loves sending winners out from their Yorkshire Dales base at Middleham down to Goodwood, so Annandale looks well worth an each-way wager at 14/1 with William Hill off a nice racing weight of 8st 5lb.

Oak Tree Stakes betting tips – Onassis gets the vote

In a wide-open renewal of the 7f Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes for fillies and mares (14:25), these Glorious Goodwood day 2 betting tips suggest course and distance winner ONASSIS as a bit of value. Trained by Charlie Fellowes, this four-year-old daughter of Dubawi won in Listed company here last October.

Onassis is perhaps best known for winning the Sandringham Stakes Handicap at Royal Ascot on a soft surface. She should get the cut in ground she likes again here. Onassis also plundered a Listed prize at Chantilly over in France last summer, so clearly has ability.

After rounding off her three-year-old campaign with a nearest at the finish sixth in the sprint on British Champions Day, she shaped as though needing the run on her return. There was clear progress made by Onassis from her tenth in a hot renewal of the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot and her last run. There was lots to like about how she stayed on and was again nearest at the finish when fourth in the Summer Stakes at York.

Onassis now meets her re-opposing stable companion and runner-up, Vadream, off 1lb worse terms. She may have even more to offer over a furlong further with ease in the ground, however. With last year’s runner-up Valeria Messalinia also in the mix, Onassis is 11/1 with Bet365 here and each-way value.

Sussex Stakes betting tips – Tilsit an each-way play against youngsters

I advised backing Poetic Flare for the feature 1m Group 1 Sussex Stakes weeks ago, What value there was in his price then has long gone, though, so now the each-way alternative looks to me to be TILSIT with three of the last four winners being older horses.

This is just my opinion, but I think Snow Lantern wants further than an easy mile like this. The trip and ground could suit the other three-year-old filly in the line-up, Alcohol Free. Tilsit looks better each-way value than these youngsters, though. This lightly-raced Juddmonte four-year-old colt won the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes over course and distance at the meeting last year.

Tilsit has since proved he can handle a softer surface with a fine second in the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan over in France. He went one better in the Summer Mile at Ascot last time out too. That was a wide-open race where he prevailed by three-quarters of a length over re-opposing runner-up Century Dream. On that evidence, Tilsit has nothing to fear from Simon and Ed Crisford’s charge.

While this demands more, it would be no surprise if he hit the frame. Trainer Charlie Hills has chosen his targets for Tilsit carefully. He may just be the best of the older horses, according to Sussex Stakes betting tips on offer. Therefore, at 14/1 with BetVictor, he appeals as the last of Glorious Goodwood day 2 betting tips for a place.
