Sitting about halfway between the July Festival at Newmarket and York’s Ebor Festival towards the end of August, the meeting is an established part of the British horse racing calendar. The dates for Glorious Goodwood only change slightly from year to year with the event run in a similar slot. It takes place while the Galway Festival happens in Ireland, but the scheduling of racing in the Emerald Isle in the evening ensures that there are no clashes.
What makes Glorious Goodwood so popular is the quality of the horses running in the big races and the fact that it takes place during the summer holidays. Some of the feature events include the 2m Goodwood Cup, 1m Sussex Stakes and 1m 2f Nassau Stakes for fillies and mares which all hold Group 1 status. These races are held on specific Glorious Goodwood dates that fit within the wider pattern of black type races. There are many other Group events during the meeting, plus some very valuable handicaps.
