Royal Ascot Dates 2020

Latest Royal Ascot Schedule & Guide

This is our Royal Ascot guide to all the action taking place during the world-famous Flat horse racing festival at one of the biggest racecourses in the UK. Like many premier meetings in this sport, Royal Ascot dates change from year to year but the event is always held in the third full week of June.

As well as attracting the best horses from the British Isles and beyond with foreign runners common, Royal Ascot itself is a major social occasion where fashion is on show and appropriate dress is essential. If you are going for a day at the races at the royal meeting, then you must look the part and know the rules on what attire is allowed in each of the enclosures.

We focus here on the Royal Ascot schedule from a sporting perspective. The meeting has been held over five days from Tuesday to Saturday towards the beginning of the second half of June since 2002. In honour of the then Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, it was decided by Ascot Racecourse that the royal meeting would expand. They have kept it that way and similar Royal Ascot dates ever since.

Through our Royal Ascot guide, you get a full breakdown of each race day by day, so you know which events are on when. The race order has developed over the years, but some events always remain in traditional slots. Our Royal Ascot schedule has the lowdown on every single one of the races taking place during this prestigious meeting in Berkshire.

Royal Ascot 2020 day 1 (Tuesday, 16 June)

  • 13:15 Buckingham Palace Handicap over seven furlongs for 3yos and up.
  • 13:50 Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1) over the straight mile for 4yos and up.
  • 14:25 Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2) over a mile-and-a-half for 3yo fillies.
  • 15:00 King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2) over a mile-and-a-half for 3yo colts and geldings.
  • 15:35 King’s Stand Stakes (Group 1) over five furlongs for 3yos and up.
  • 16:10 Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) over the straight mile for 4yo fillies and mares and up.
  • 16:40 Ascot Stakes (Handicap) over two-and-a-half miles for 4yos and up.
Note from the Editor - Day 1:

Royal Ascot kicks off in style with Group 1 races for sprinters in the King’s Stand and milers with the Queen Anne on Tuesday. I would also watch the King Edward VII and Ribblesdale Stakes carefully. These Group 2 events for three-year-olds usually take place after the Epsom Derby and Oaks, but are stepping stones to the Classics this year.

Note from the Editor - Day 2:

The Prince Of Wales’s Stakes stays as the Wednesday feature, but punters looking for their handicap fix have plenty to get stuck into on day two of Royal Ascot. I am excited to see the Copper Horse Handicap added to the schedule, as this could provide us with clues for the Ebor Handicap at York worth total prize money of £1,000,000 this year.

Note from the Editor - Day 3:

The Gold Cup at Royal Ascot is one of my favourite races of the entire year, let alone these five days. Elite Flat stayers tackle the ultimate test of stamina on the Thursday of the royal meeting. The new Golden Gates Handicap, meanwhile, has piqued my interest as a halfway house between the Britannia later on day three and King George V Stakes from the Wednesday.

  • 16:40 Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap) over a mile-and-a-half for 3yos and up.
Note from the Editor - Day 4:

You are going to learn plenty for the future on the Friday of Royal Ascot. Aside from the feature Commonwealth Cup sprint, it’s the Group 2 action which in my view may be the most absorbing. The Queen’s Vase is a St Leger trial I always respect, while the Hardwicke Stakes for older horses always attracts classy types. Don’t forget the juvenile races either!

  • 15:00 St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1) over the round mile for 3yo colts.
  • 15:35 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Group 1) over six furlongs for 4yos and up.
  • 16:10 Wokingham Stakes (Handicap) over six furlongs for 3yos and up.
  • 16:40 Queen Alexandra Stakes (Conditions) over almost two-and-three-quarter miles for 4yos and up.
Note from the Editor - Day 5:

A bumper eight-race card on the Saturday ensures Royal Ascot ends with a bang. I can’t wait to see which horses that ran in the Guineas come for the St James’s Palace and Coronation Stakes. It’s a quick turnaround from the Rowley Mile Classics to the royal meeting. The other Group 1 – the Diamond Jubilee – puts older sprinters in the spotlight and the longest Flat race in Britain, the Queen Alexandra, brings the curtain down.
