Hungerford Stakes Betting Tips – Threat the Value Play in Newbury Feature

Newbury Betting Tips · Saturday, 15th Aug 2020 - 15:35

Hannon colt can capitalise on ease in grade

The feature race at Newbury on Saturday is the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes (15:35). Now dropped back in class, Threat looks value to get back to winning ways in the 7f contest for three-year-olds and upwards.

This Richard Hannon trained colt has some very smart form as a juvenile when winning three times and posting some solid efforts in defeat.

After scoring in good style on debut at Newmarket, the son of Footstepsinthesand ran a blinder when a half-length runner-up to Arizona in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He then went down fighting when beaten half-a-length by subsequent Group 1 Commonwealth Cup winner Golden Horde in a similar grade affair at Goodwood, before landing the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York.

Threat then followed-up in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes over 7f at Doncaster when showing a smart turn of foot to score a shade cosily by a neck.

Top rated on adjusted figures

He was next far from disgraced when beaten just over three lengths when finishing fifth to Earthlight in a Group 1 at Newmarket.

Threat has had just two starts this season. He shaped quite nicely in the first of those in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes over a mile at Royal Ascot, where he held every chance two out before fading late on to finish a 6 3/4 lengths fifth of seven to Palace Pier.

Threat then found the drop back to 6f against him at Newmarket last month when a well-beaten 10th of 12 to Oxted in the Group 1 July Cup.

The Hungerford Stakes looks far more suitable and the Cheveley Park Stud owned colt is 1-1 over the trip.

This also represents a return to calmer waters and Threat receives a handy 6lb weight-for age allowance from Dream Of Dreams who is rated 5lb his superior.

It means he comes out on top on adjusted ratings in this 10-runner line-up. So, taking everything into account, odds of 5/1 with William Hill about Threat make plenty of appeal.

Dreams Of Dreams a major player under Murphy

Dream Of Dreams heads the Hungerford Stakes betting on the back of a cracking reappearance run and looks a huge player now back over 7f.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, this six-year-old finished runner-up to Sir Dancealot in the 2018 running of this contest and has a fine overall strike rate of nearly 20 per cent.

After winning his first two starts last season, the son of Dream Ahead ran a screamer when a fast finishing head second to Blue Point in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes over 6f at Royal Ascot.

Dream Of Dreams was then not at his best in three subsequent outings, but looked as good as ever on return to action at Royal Ascot when again finishing second in the Diamond Jubilee.

He flew home under Ryan Moore after being held-up well off the pace and failed by only a head to overhaul Hello Youmzain

Given how the race panned out, it was a terrific effort. The extra furlong here looks sure to play to his strengths.

Dream Of Dreams has won once and been placed in just four starts over it. He also now gets the services in the saddle of the in-form Oisin Murphy for the first time.

The ease in grade is another plus and underfoot conditions also hold no fears, so everything looks in place for a huge run.

However, Dream Of Dreams will need gaps to avoid trouble in-running and them to appear at the right time given his run-style.

Odds of 5/2 with Betway, therefore look plenty short enough. For that reason alone he is opposed on this occasion for all that his form claims are crystal clear.

Breathtaking Look the each-way angle in Hungerford Stakes

Of those at double figure odds, Breathtaking Look appeals most from and each-way betting perspective at the 11/1 on offer with Unibet.

This Stuart Williams trained five-year-old mare progressed throughout last season when winning three times.

In the last of those at Doncaster over the 7f trip of this, she made all in the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes and only had to be ridden out to readily account for Preening by a length.

Breathtaking Look has had four starts this season and looked better than ever in posting some solid efforts in defeat.

They include when going down by just a length to subsequent Group 1 July Cup winner Oxted in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes over 6f at Newmarket when keeping on well for pressure without being able to match the pace of the winner.

Breathtaking Look also ran really well in a Group 3 over 6f at York when headed close home and beaten just a neck by Queen Jojo.

She comes into the Hungerford Stakes having also posted a solid effort when a three-length fourth of 12 to One Master in the Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, when racing freely in the early stages and paying the price late on.

Breathtaking Look is clearly in good heart and she boasts a healthy strike rate of 37.5 per cent over the trip, having won three times and been placed once in eight starts.

The booking of Adan Kirby to do the steering also catches the eye, as he is 1-1 on her, and underfoot conditions are also fine – so everything looks in place for a big run.
