O’Brien filly has Yorkshire Oaks rivals at her mercy
The feature race on day 2 of the Ebor Festival at York this Thursday is the 1m 4f Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks for fillies and mares (15:15).
In the absence of dual winner Enable, Love cannot be opposed as she seeks a seasonal hat-trick.
Trained by Aidan O’Brien who has sent out four race victors from Ballydoyle since 2006, the three-year-old filly has been a force to be reckoned with in Classic company this term.
Love had a busy juvenile campaign, winning three of her seven starts. Those included the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on Irish Champions Weekend.
After finishing third to Quadrilateral in the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket, she reversed form and the placings on reappearance in the 1000 Guineas.
As Love pulled over four lengths clear of the field, she looked the type that would have even more to offer when stepped up in trip. The daughter of Galileo proved that with a demolition job last time out.
Completing a Classic double, Love smashed the course record for the Epsom Oaks with a nine-length romp. Although the re-opposing third, Frankly Darling, didn’t handle the undulations of that track, she was no match.
The stamina and power demonstrated by Love that day explains why she is the bookies’ favourite for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France this autumn.
Her presence in the Yorkshire Oaks has rivals running scared. Enable wasn’t even entered and rerouted to Kempton for her Arc prep.
A repeat of Love’s Epsom Oaks display means none of her five rivals can live with her. That is a reflection of her favourite’s chance here.
Anything other than a win for Love is a disappointment here. Despite prohibitive odds, there is no case against her in this.

The return to a flatter track means Frankly Darling should again hit the frame. One of two in the Yorkshire Oaks this year trained by John Gosden, this Frankel filly won her two starts prior to Epsom.
Frankly Darling ran out an easy five-length victor on the all-weather in maiden company at Newcastle. She then took a big step forward from that by following-up in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Despite taking a keen hold, the three-year-old led two out and was clear by the final furlong. Frankly Darling then kept on strongly for a 1 3/4 lengths victory over Ennistymon.
There were excuses for the runner-up reversing Royal Ascot form last time out. Gosden is adamant that Frankly Darling did not handle the track in The Oaks.
Many fillies don’t. Although Frankie Dettori misses the Ebor Festival after high-profile rides in France, Rab Havlin partnered her to her reappearance win.
On adjusted ratings, Frankly Darling is third best behind Love and One Voice here. However, she still has 12lb to find on the favourite.
With a Group win at the trip, Frankly Darling is the clear pick of Gosden’s pair. Half-sister Franconia has won both her starts at Listed level this term, including at the course, but needs another big step forward here.
One Voice also on Yorkshire Oaks shortlist
Glorious Goodwood runner-up One Voice ran a huge race in defeat last time out. For that reason, she also has claims of making the frame again.
Trained in Ireland by Jessica Harrington, the three-year-old daughter of Poet’s Voice now steps up in trip after a win and two seconds over 1m 2f.
After being chinned on the line in a Listed contest on reappearance, One Voice landed the Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes at Leopardstown.
She was then an unlucky two-length fifth in a Group 2 at The Curragh. One Voice couldn’t get through a wall of horses approaching the final furlong.
When the gaps finally opened, it was too late. As One Voice ran on well, however, there looked to be races in her. She made Prix de Diane heroine Fancy Blue pull out all the stops in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes when last in action.
One Voice went down fighting by a neck. As she is related to Poet’s Word, who won the King George at Ascot, she may get the Yorkshire Oaks trip.
On official ratings, One Voice also has the least to find with Love. This demands more, but Harrington’s progressive filly should be involved in the scrap for places here.
