Ascot Betting Tips · Saturday, 19th Jun 2021 - 16:20

These 2021 Diamond Jubilee Stakes betting tips look at the final Group 1 of Royal Ascot. This 6f sprint contest for older horses headlines the fifth and last day of the meeting (16:20). See who our tipsters like for the feature race as the curtain comes down on another fabulous festival.

Diamond Jubilee Stakes betting tips – Starman can send punters into orbit

Ed Walker hasn’t trained a Group 1 winner yet, but STARMAN has good claims of bringing elite success to the stable. An improving four-year-old by sprinting sire Dutch Art, this colt has won four of his five career starts.

After debut success in a Lingfield maiden, Starman followed-up at Doncaster and then hit the hat-trick when stepped up in Listed company at York. He lost the Champion Sprint race over this course and distance in October at the start. Starman was so slowly into stride that he couldn’t make any impression. The soft autumn ground might not suited either.

He resumed his upward curve on reappearance in a Group 2 back at York. Starman got a better start here, hit the front approaching the final furlong and found plenty for pressure. Although pressed pretty much all the way to the line by the re-opposing Nahaarr, he prevailed by a neck under Oisin Murphy who again takes the ride here.

The front two pulled three lengths clear of Oxted in third, who has since landed the King’s Stand earlier in the week. After just those five starts, Starman can continue progressing. It wouldn’t surprise me if he confirmed the form with William Haggas’ runner. Starman is 7/2 with BetVictor to do just that and make the step up to the highest level with more to come from him.

Dream Of Dreams chief among dangers

There have been two hard luck stories for DREAM OF DREAMS in this race during the last couple of years. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the seven-year-old gelding has gone down by a head in 2019 and 2020. Blue Point and Hello Youmzain denied the son of Dream Ahead a Royal Ascot moment. The question is will it be third time lucky?

Dream Of Dreams went one better next time out in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes over 7f at Newbury last August. The race became an absolute romp as he bolted up on a softer surface by seven lengths. Group 1 glory followed in the Haydock Sprint Cup down in trip when he held the re-opposing Glen Shiel by just over a length.

Those later summer exertions may have told as Dream Of Dreams could only finish eighth over course and distance on Champions Day. He has since proved he retains all his old ability, however, when defying the welter burden of 9st 12lb in a Listed contest at Windsor with a ready victory. This demands more but it’s also a clear target for Dream Of Dreams.

The only concerns would be the form of Stoute’s runners at Royal Ascot throughout the week. Dream Of Dreams may also vulnerable to younger improving sorts like Starman and Nahaarr. Any further that falls enhances his hopes, though. Therefore, Dream Of Dreams rates a big danger at 4/1 with 888sport and is worth his place in these Diamond Jubilee Stakes betting tips here.

Glen Shiel the best each-way value

As the only course and distance winner in the line-up, GLEN SHIEL can’t be ignored, especially if more rain hits Ascot. Trained by Archie Watson, this seven-year-old Pivotal gelding progressed last season from handicaps to the highest level. He also won four of his eight starts, including the Group 3 Phoenix Sprint at The Curragh.

Success in the Emerald Isle gave connections confidence to pitch Glen Shiel in deeper waters. Also beaten by Dream Of Dreams in the Haydock Sprint Cup, he turned the tables on British Champions Day here. The form has also worked out really well, throwing up plenty of subsequent winners. The only doubt is whether the ground will turn quite so soft now.

Glen Shiel shaped as if needing the run on his return to action in the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes across the Irish Sea. He didn’t see the race out that day, but should strip fitter for the outing. Glen Shiel has also only won first time out once in his career. The re-opposing Sonaiyla has since cashed in on an ease in grade and taken a Group 3 too.

I would expect Glen Shiel to improve past that Irish raider under regular partner Hollie Doyle, especially off 3lb better terms. Should the weather deteriorate, then he won’t be 12/1 with Betfair, who pay four places on each-way bets. That is why Glen Shiel also gets a mention among these Diamond Jubilee Stakes betting tips in what an absorbing renewal.
