Jamie Clark was Sports Editor of Coral bookmakers between 2014 and 2017 during their merger with Labrokes and a key period for the British betting industry. Working as a bookie’s runner on the point to point circuit in the Midlands and at Market Rasen Racecourse where his late godfather had a trackside pitch growing up, he has had ties to horse racing all of his life. A regular visitor to Cheltenham during the National Hunt season and York over the summer, he has been involved in Horsebetting.com since its inception. Jamie now brings you his take on major news stories from the racing world and those all-important betting tips.
In these Royal Ascot Tuesday betting tips we look at the best value wagers from the opening day of the meeting. Horsebetting.com experts assess the King’s Stand Stakes separately, so there are other races. The Queen Anne Stakes for older milers and St James’s Palace for three-year-old colts are also Group 1 races. Get the lowdown on our top bets from day one of the premier British Flat horse racing festival.
Royal Ascot Tuesday betting tips – Patrick Sarsfield your best bet
In the Listed 1m 2f Wolferton Stakes (17:35), PATRICK SARSFIELD shaped really well on his return to action. It would be no surprise if he went one better after coming on for his reappearance run. Trained in Ireland by Joseph O’Brien, this progressive five-year-old Australia gelding progressed last season and won his first three starts.
After starting in handicap company, Patrick Sarsfield quickened clear and completed his hat-trick in the Group 3 Meld Stakes. He was then far from disgraced when third at the highest level and only beaten 1 1/2 lengths by Barney Roy in Germany. Patrick Sarsfield chased home the thriving Skalleti in the Prix Dollar on Arc Weekend at Longchamp on his final start of last term.
The winner has come out and hit a hat-trick this season, including a breakthrough Group 1 triumph in the Prix d’Ispahan at Longchamp last time out. Patrick Sarsfield ran a massive race in defeat under a welter burden of 10st at The Curragh on his comeback when chinned on the line by Reve De Vol. As that one received 16lb in weight-for-age and penalties, it was a huge effort.
Race terms now favour Patrick Sarsfield. On adjusted ratings, he comes out 3lb and upwards clear of the field. O’Brien teams up with jockey Tom Marquand, who rode the St Leger winner for the stable last autumn. There is plenty to like about the profile of Patrick Sarsfield here, so odds of 4/1 with Betfred look well worth a wager.

St James’s Palace Stakes betting tips – Lucky Vega could go better
In the St James’s Palace Stakes over the round mile earlier on the card (16:20), LUCKY VEGA should improve for the return to a sounder surface. On British and Irish Classic form, Jessica Harrington’s Lope De Vega colt has something to find with re-opposing Irish raider Poetic Flare.
However, the Jim Bolger inmate has already run four times this season and a fourth outing in just over six weeks is asking a lot. Lucky Vega has just half-a-length to find with Poetic Flare on their first encounter in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. That form looks as though it’ll be more relevant than when they met again on much softer ground in the Irish equivalent at The Curragh.
Taking place in a deluge of rain, that going may not have suited Lucky Vega at all. He still ran on into fourth but took a while to get going in the downpour. There is no obvious reason why Chindit, fifth in the 2000 Guineas, should reverse that Classic form.
Although there were others that didn’t act on the Rowley Mile that day, it’s also hard to see why La Barossa and Wembley can turn the tables from The Curragh. If the amount of racing Poetic Flare has had catches up with him, then Lucky Vega looks the value play at 15/2 with Bet365 and definitely worth backing each-way.
Queen Anne Stakes betting tips – Top Rank the each-way alternative
In the meeting opener, the Queen Anne Stakes (14:30), our Royal Ascot Tuesday betting tips can’t ignore the obvious claims of Palace Pier. He looks very much like the best older miler in Europe, but prohibitive odds of 4/9 aren’t value. Aidan O’Brien has the main dangers, according to the market, yet Order Of Australia only has one piece of good form from the Breeders’ Cup.
This race isn’t round a bend but over the straight mile and therefore a stiffer test. Ballydoyle stable companion Lope Y Fernandez has been a beaten favourite at Royal Ascot twice before. At bigger odds, the Lockinge Stakes third TOP RANK has seven lengths to find with Palace Pier but looks overpriced for a place again.
Trained by James Tate, this five-year-old son of Dark Angel landed a Listed prize at Doncaster on his reappearance. A previous Group 3 winner, Top Rank still pulled well clear of the remainder in-behind Palace Pier and Lady Bowthorpe at Newbury last time out. He is well worth another crack at the highest level in a renewal of the Queen Anne that is very open outside of the favourite.
I would consider backing Top Rank each-way at 18/1 with William Hill or looking at the 7/1 in the without Palace Pier market. Old favourites Lord Glitters and Accidental Agent have course and distance form in their favour but looks vulnerable to improvers at this stage of their careers.
