This Hughie Morrison trained seven-year-old is a tricky customer that has only won five of his 36 starts, but does have some smart form in the book.
He ran very well in last year’s Chester Cup when third of 17 to Montaly off a mark of 102 and went on to land a 1m 7f Listed contest at Maisons-Lafitte by a short-head off an official rating of 103. The son of Shirocco also put in a fine effort on seasonal reappearance when a six-length runner-up to Magic Circle in this year’s renewal of the extended 2m 2f Chester Cup off 101.
Although no match for the easy winner, he stuck to the task well. The pair also met on level weights; so, given that Magic Circle has since bolted up by six lengths in a Group 3 at Sandown and is considered a leading contender for the Melbourne Cup, it was a solid effort which reads well in the context of this contest.
Fun Mac also ran very well two starts back when a half-a-length third to Holdhasigreen when attempting to retain his crown in the aforementioned race at Maisons-Lafitte off 102, and is now able to race of 100. It makes him a big player at the weights, especially on his run in the Chester Cup.
Jockey Rab Havlin also gets a good tune out of him having won once and been placed twice in five starts when in the saddle. So, despite having to shoulder top weight of 9st 10lb, Fun Mac looks to have plenty going for him in this and thus features as the main selection in our 2018 Cesarewitch Trial betting tips.Irish raider Golden Spear feared mostThere are plenty of potential dangers in a wide-open looking renewal, but Golden Spear is feared most. The seven-year-old is a useful dual purpose performer who hails from the shrewd Irish yard of Tony Martin and has been given a chance by the assessor.
This gelding was last successful on the level at Leopardstown back in October 2016 when landing the valuable 23-runner November Handicap at Leopardstown. He stayed on strongly to beat subsequent 2017 Ebor Handicap hero Nakeeta by half-a-length off a mark of 87 – despite getting struck over the head by that rival rider’s whip inside the final furlong.
It was a gutsy and game display, and Golden Spear also beat the aforementioned Magic Circle. The son of Kyllachy has since run well on numerous occasions in decent hurdle contests, and was also far from disgraced on his penultimate outing when a keeping on 3 1/2 lengths sixth of 13 to St Stephen’s Green in a 2m handicap on the flat at The Curragh off a mark of 90.
Golden Spear is able to race in this off 4lb lower and his revised rating of 86 means that he is now below his last winning mark. It gives him major claims from a handicapping perspective, so he looks well worth another crack at the 2m 2f trip of this.
In receipt of a stone (14lb) from Fun Mac, he looks sure to give that rival plenty to think about in the hands of John Egan. Golden Spear is thus also among our 2018 Cesarewitch Trial betting tips in a typically fierce renewal.Stars Over The Sea another with claimsIn-form trainer Ian Williams launches a three-pronged attack on the contest, and Stars Over The Sea looks the pick of the trio. The seven-year-old ran well when runner-up in a Group 3 at Naas 12 months ago and comes into the race on the back of two really solid efforts.
In the first of those, he stayed on well to go down by just half-a-length to Cleonte in a 10-runner affair over 2m at Ascot off a mark of 98. Stars Over The Sea got raised 2lb for that, but found only Star Of The East 1 3/4 lengths too good in 1m 6f contest at Newmarket last month where he seemed unsuited by the drop back in trip.
Those runs suggest his time is near and Star Over The Sea is able to race in this off an unchanged mark of 100. Although unproven over the 2m 2f trip, this the son of Sea The Stars stays 2m well and the way he has been running off late suggests it may well suit.
So, with the stable operating at a strike rate of just under 29 per cent with its runners in the past 14 days at the time of writing, everything looks in place for a big run. Stars Over The Sea is therefore one to consider backing each-way with usual place terms on offer.Your Next Bet
