Mullins mount flawless over fences so far
The mighty Monkfish is all the rage for further Cheltenham Festival glory this Wednesday in the 3m Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (13:55). Trained by Willie Mullins, this Rich and Susannah Ricci owned seven-year-old hasn’t put a foot wrong over fences.
A gelding by prolific sire Stowaway, Monkfish has won his last six starts in the manner of a top prospect. Minor novice hurdle wins at Fairyhouse and Thurles were followed-up with success in the Albert Bartlett here 12 months ago. The way he rallied and retook the lead near the finish suggested he was all about stamina.
That is the route connections have gone down in Monkfish’s novice chase campaign too. He easily had the beating of Sams Profile and Diol Ker, both winners over hurdles since on his bow over fences at Fairyhouse. Monkfish has since confirmed the Albert Bartlett form with old rival Latest Exhibition but increasingly wide margins.
He looks the real deal and has jumped with real slickness and accuracy. Granted a clear round, it’s hard to see any other result but Monkfish returning to the Cheltenham winners enclosure. His price of 4/7 with Betfred reflects that, however, but there is just no opposing him on all known form.

If the red-hot favourite doesn’t fire, then Eklat De Rire has a progressive profile and could give him most to think about. Trained by Henry De Bromhead, the seven-year-old son of Saddex has won four of his five career starts including an Irish point.
Eklat De Rire made the step up in class from a beginners chase at Punchestown and followed-up in Grade 3 company at Naas. The Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase demands more, but he’s open to any amount of further improvement. On that basis, Eklat De Rire is a 15/2 chance with Betfair to cause an upset.
With Next Destination swerving Monkfish and running on Tuesday in the National Hunt Chase, The Big Breakaway brings decent efforts to the table. Trained by Colin Tizzard, he chased home Shan Blue in the Kauto Star at Kempton over Christmas.
The Big Breakaway is also a course and distance winner, but that form is weak. Staying chases are what the son of Getaway was bought for, but there is another to consider in the small but select field of six. There isn’t a lot of juice in his price either.
Sporting John each-way value in Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase
On a form line through Shan Blue, Sporting John looks overpriced. He stayed on for a hopeless position to overhaul that one and win the Grade 1 Scilly Isles at Sandown last time out. Trained by Philip Hobbs for JP McManus, this other Getaway gelding should appreciate going up in trip based on how he shaped there.
Sporting John didn’t fire at all at Cheltenham when fancied for the Ballymore 12 months ago. That is the only worry. He has clearly improved since a below par chase debut behind the re-opposing Fiddlerontheroof at Exeter. Sporting John remains lightly-raced and open to further improvement, so may be worth chancing at 12/1 with William Hill each-way here.
Since his Exeter win, Tizzard’s other runner Fiddlerontheroof has finished runner-up three times at Grade 2 level. He chased home Caribean Boy at Newbury, then Allart at Ascot and Next Destination at Warwick. A burst blood vessel found after the last of those is cause for concern.
Like Sporting John, Fiddlerontheroof didn’t fire at all in last year’s Festival when way down the field in the Supreme. In a Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase lacking depth, Monkfish has frightened most of the competition away and will take some beating.
