O’Brien can dominate Leopardstown Classic trials again

A step up in trip to the 1m 2f of the Group 3 Derrinstown Derby Trial should suit Iberia on Leopardstown Classic Trials day in Ireland on Tuesday (14:00).

One of three in this Classic hopefuls race for trainer Aidan O’Brien, the son of Galileo is one from five starts as a two-year-old.

That doesn’t tell the whole story, however, as Iberia ran some fine races in defeat. They include when staying on but unable to reach the leaders when third in the Group 2 Royal Lodge at Newmarket.

Iberia was just 1 1/2 lengths behind Kameko, and the winner has since landed the 2000 Guineas on the Rowley Mile. That is form of the highest order.

Connections ran Iberia again when a keeping on second in a Group 3 on heavy ground here and dropping back in trip. Based on the way he shaped as a juvenile, he wants further.

As Iberia was also attempting to give Stela Star 3lb last time out, that defeat can be upgraded. Despite the prsence of unexposed Ballydoyle stable companion Russian Emperor in the Derrinstown Derby Trial, he appeals most.

Year Of The Tiger has big ease in grade at Leopardstown

In the 7f Classic Trial (15:00), Year Of The Tiger has his easiest assignment for sometime. Another O’Brien inmate out of sire extraordinaire Galileo, he was hanging in Group company throughout last season.

Year Of The Tiger was 2 1/4 lengths behind Iberia in the Royal Lodge and filled the same spot in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes won by Pinatubo.

In that Newmarket run, he was only two lengths shy of Wichita who ran second to Kameko in the 2000 Guineas.

As Year Of The Tiger was then third behind the Rowley Mile Classic winner in the Group 1 Vertem Futurity over 1m, he brings leading form claims into this.

He has 11lbs and upwards in hand on his seven rivals. This Leopardstown Classic Trial is much easier than the elite company Year Of The Tiger kept last term, so he should resume winning ways now down in distance.

A New Dawn solid each-way in Fillies’ Classic Trial

Joseph O’Brien is out to upset his all-conquering father with A New Dawn in the 7f Group 3 Fillies’ Classic Trial (14:30).

She looks a solid each-way against the Ballydoyle battalion which is three strong here. The daughter of Zoffany placed in her last three outings last season all in black type races.

That is a level of consistency which the runners representing O’Brien senior lack somewhat. A New Dawn was unlucky to be chinned in the final strides in her penultimate outing in the Group 3 Weld Park at The Curragh.

Although that was on heavy going, she has won on good ground. A sounder surface may suit A New Dawn who was again denied in the final strides last time out in a Listed contest.

While she has 2lb to find on official figures with ratings topper Tango, that one has erratic form figures.

Precious Moments is another to consider each-way, but A New Dawn has more place form to her name. She can make the frame again under Shane Crosse on Leopardstown Classic Trials day.
