Thriving Irish raider taken to collect for Murtagh

The feature race on a cracking card at Newmarket this Saturday is the 1m Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes for fillies and mares (14:45).

Irish raider Champers Elysees comes into the race at the top of her game, so is a strong fancy to land the spoils.

This three-year-old daughter of Elzaam hails from the yard of Johnny Murtagh, who never won the race during his illustrious career in the saddle.

Since landing a handicap on return to action at The Curragh off a mark of 88, Champers Elysees has improved at a rapid rate of knots and won her three subsequent outings to now be rated 115.

After scoring Listed success at Galway by seven lengths, she showed a willing attitude to follow-up by three-quarters of a length in a Group 3 at Gowran Park.

Connections then decided to pitch Champers Elysees into Group 1 company. She made it four on the bounce when landing the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown by just over a length from Peaceful.

After being held-up towards the rear, Champers Elysees made stealthy headway a furlong from home and kept on strongly inside the last to win going away at the line. It was a most taking display.

There is no reason why she should noty confirm the form with the re-opposing runner-up. Champers Elysees also has the soft ground that she relishes and is once again partnered by Colin Keane who rode her to success in the Matron.

There is simply nothing not to like about her chances in this. At 7/2 with William Hill, Champers Elysees had to be the selection in a cracking renewal of the Sun Chariot Stakes.

Peaceful has a big shout under Moore

The aforementioned Peaceful represents all-conquering Ballydoyle handler Aidan O’Brien who has won the race three times, including two of the last four renewals, so commands the utmost respect.

Prior to her second in the Matron, this three-year-old daughter of Galileo had captured Classic glory on seasonal reappearance at The Curragh when keeping on strongly to beat Fancy Blue by two lengths in the Irish 1000 Guineas.

She then lost little in defeat when a neck third of 11 to that rival in the Group 1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly when seemingly finding the step up to an extended 1m 2f just beyond her stamina limits.

Peaceful was then given a 69-day break before returning to action in the Matron, so is entitled to come on for that spin. She also remains open to more progression after just six starts.

As Peaceful ran well on her sole start on testing going when a neck second to Born With Pride in a Listed contest here on her final start as a juvenile, she should go well.

Another plus is that O’Brien is in fine form and operating at about a 24 per cent strike rate at the time of writing. Ryan Moore now gets the leg up on Peaceful for the first time.

A big run looks assured and she can be backed at 15/4 with Betfair for revenge on Champers Elysees.

Terebellum the pick of Gosden’s Sun Chariot Stakes duo

John Gosden saddles two leading contenders in the shape of Nazeef and Terebellum. The latter is proven at this level and has form on soft ground, so looks the pick of the pair

This four-year-old progressed throughout last season and has won three of her seven starts. She looked better than ever on seasonal reappearance here after landing the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes over 1m 2f by just over a length from Queen Power.

That success earned Terebellum a crack at the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot and she ran a stormer in the 1m contest to finish a head second of 15 to Circus Maximus.

After travelling strongly, the Godolphin owned daughter of Sea The Stars was ridden to take up the lead a furlong from home and asked to put the race to be by Frankie Dettori.

The race looked hers for the taking, but Circus Maximus rallied tenaciously to get up in the dying strides. Terbellum then got turned over at odds-on in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at this venue when a half-length third of six to stable companion Nazeef.

However, she was forced to make the running that day and those tactics didn’t play to her strengths.

As stronger gallop looks assured here and James Doyle should be able to get Terebellum in a handy position on the heels of the leaders before producing her as late as possible.

She is also the highest rated in this 12-runner renewal of the Sun Chariot Stakes off 116; so, at a standout 11/2 with Betvictor, looks a solid each-way betting proposition.
