2019 Dante winner back at scene of greatest triumph
Telecaster regained the winning thread last time out, so can follow-up in the Group 2 York Stakes over an extended 1m 2f on the Knavesmire this Saturday (14:40).
Trained by Hughie Morrison, his finest hour came when landing the Dante Stakes over course and distance. Telecaster defeated some lauded rivals that day at York.
This four-year-old New Approach colt bolted up by nine lengths at Windsor prior to his Dante success. The form of that last visit to the Knavesmire is very strong.
Telecaster held Too Darn Hot by a length, had Japan beaten 5 3/4 lengths in fourth and Nayef Road a further length-and-a-half back in sixth.
Although Frankie Dettori accepted the runner-up didn’t stay the trip, Too Darn Hot went to add two Group 1s to his CV.
Japan, meanwhile, went on to hit a hat-trick later last summer completed in the Juddmonte International here. He was also third in the Epsom Derby and fourth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp.
Nayef Road came out and scored the Group 3 Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, then placed third in the St Leger. He also made a winning reappearance in the Sagaro Stakes and chased home Stradivarius in the Ascot Gold Cup.
Came on for return in Brigadier Gerard
Although Telecaster bombed out in The Derby and the Eclipse at Sandown, connections drew stumps for the campaign. He shaped as if needing his return to action when weakening late on and a 1 1/4 lengths third to Lord North at Haydock.
That came in the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes in which the re-opposing Elarqam was second. However, that one failed to fire when upped in trip for the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The winner advertised the form when following-up in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. Telecaster has since resumed winning ways with a four-length victory in a Group 3 contest at Longchamp.
While he was sent off odds-on and won easing down, he is well worth another crack at this level. Morrison opts to run Telecaster in the York Stakes rather than going back into Group 1 company for the Tattersalls Gold Cup.
That looks a smart move as that Irish feature at The Curragh has plenty of Aidan O’Brien horses entered. This is easier, then, and Telecaster clearly took a step forward from the Brigadier Gerard.
You cannot say the same of Elarqam; so, on that basis, Telecaster is preferred now returned to the scene of his greatest triumph.

As he tops official ratings and the field of seven race off level weights, Elarqam still commands respect. Trained by Mark Johnston in Yorkshire at Middleham, the five-year-old son of Frankel has won five of 15 career starts.
Elarqam likes the Knavesmire where he has course figures of 1313. Those last three appearances are all over course and distance.
Owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum, Elarqam stayed on strongly on soft ground as rain pelted the track before the York Stakes last year.
He was following-up on a gutsy head victory in the Listed 1m 2f Gala Stakes at Sandown. Addeybb, beaten 3 1/4 lengths by Elarqam that day, was a Royal Ascot winner going into their meeting.
The runner-up has since won two Group 1 races in Australia when sent Down Under by William Haggas. However, the York Stakes form of 12 months ago does not look as strong as the Dante.
Elarqam was an unlucky third behind Japan in the Juddmonte International, though, when denied a clear run in the final furlong. He also finished in front of re-opposing trio King Of Comedy, Regal Reality and Lord Glitters.
As Elarqam either meets them off equal or better terms, he should confirm that form. He shaped like further would suit when rallying and going down by a short-head in the Brigadier Gerard on reappearance.
Although losing a shoe in the Hardwicke last time out, Elarqam weakened towards the finish. A horse like Telecatser with half as many runs under his belt and still some scope for further improvement makes Elarqam look vulnerable in his bid to defend his York Stakes crown.
Despite his good course record, there are reasons to take him on. Elarqam is opposed but you can see why he heads the betting.
Aspetar best of rest in York Stakes
There are two Group 1 winners in the line-up and, of those, Aspetar looks the pick. Trained by Roger Charlton, this five-year-old Al Kazeem gelding has a good record of fours wins and as many places from 12 starts.
Aspetar spent the last campaigned over further than the York Stakes trip. It yielded fine victories in Europe in the Grand Prix de Chantilly and Preis von Europa at Cologne.
Connections dropped Aspetar back in distance for a hot renewal of the Gala Stakes on reappearance. He went down fighting by a neck at Sandown to French raider Magny Cours.
The winner scalped Persian King, who has won twice since including the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan, on his previous start. Aspetar also finished a neck in front of the re-opposing Fox Chairman too.
Global Giant, a further length-and-a-half behind in fourth, has since landed a Listed affair at Newbury. That gives the form a smart look.
Although there isn’t much between Aspetar and Fox Chairman, official ratings put the former 6lb ahead. Fox Chairman has also had two runs coming into the York Stakes, whereas Aspetar should strip fitter for his return.
He looks the best of the rest in a renewal which looks trappy outside the first two in the betting. Aspetar may take advantage if one or other of the market principals fail to fire, though.
