In these 2021 Coronation Stakes betting tips from Royal Ascot by Horsebetting.com experts have their say on the Group 1 race for three-year-old fillies (16:20). This contest takes place on the round mile rather than the straight course. See which horses you should back in this co-feature.
Coronation Stakes betting tips – Mother Earth appeals most
After tipping MOTHER EARTH for 1000 Guineas glory at Newmarket, I can’t abandon her at Royal Ascot. Trained by Aidan O’Brien, this daughter of Zoffany took her form to a new level with Classic glory on the Rowley Mile. Progressive as a juvenile, Mother Earth landed a Group 3 at Naas after an unlucky third at this meeting 12 months ago.
She then hit the frame in four of her final five starts last season. Although the re-opposing Pretty Gorgeous twice got the better of her, including in the Fillies’ Mile, there is plenty of evidence that Mother Earth has trained on. After defying odds of 14/1 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf over in the USA, her career-best came in the Guineas.
Mother Earth rattled off the fast ground at Newmarket keeping on well for a length victory under Frankie Dettori. There was then no disgrace in her finishing runner-up in the French 1000 Guineas at Longchamp on completely different going. The ground was very soft that day, so Mother Earth went down fighting by just over a length.
I’m more than happy to forgive her getting collared by a 38/1 outsider. The forecast rain isn’t such that the going will change from good to firm to bottomless. Ryan Moore is now back on board, so she’s the Ballydoyle first-string for this. Mother Earth is a 7/2 chance with Betfair to go one better and get her head back in front.

Other Irish raiders have obvious claims on the pick of their form. EMPRESS JOSEPHINE needed every yard of the trip in the Irish 1000 Guineas to get up and win, so all the rain that falls will help her chances. Also trained by O’Brien, she just touched off stable companion Joan Of Arc on the line.
I think she might be even better over further, but it’s interesting connections run her against fellow Classic heroine Mother Earth. Whether conditions turn entirely into the favour of Empress Josephine, a daughter of Galileo, remains to be seen. She is 6/1 with Betfair to follow-up on the big step forward made at The Curragh.
The aforementioned PRETTY GORGEOUS may have been caught out on very testing ground in the Irish Guineas. She came to race without a run, something which in hindsight trainer Joseph O’Brien might regret. A daughter of Lawman, Pretty Gorgeous was most effective on a softer surface as a juvenile, taking the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket on her final start.
She had the beating of Mother Earth then, so may do so again. You can’t take the Irish Guineas seventh literally after 226 days off the track. It was only in the final half-furlong that Pretty Gorgeous weakened, and she should strip fitter for her reappearance. That is reflected in best odds of 6/1 with Bet365, and that’s why she also features in these Coronation Stakes betting tips here.
Shale and Fev Rover worth considering each-way
Donnacha O’Brien saddles SHALE who beat Pretty Gorgeous on good ground. Another daughter of the mighty Galileo, she progressed as a juvenile and landed the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at The Curragh. Shale won’t like the ground too soft, but should come on for her reappearance when fifth in a Leopardstown Classic trial.
She shaped better than the bare result suggests, though. Shale couldn’t go the pace to challenge, so going back up to a mile from 7f should suit. As she was only beaten by 2 3/4 lengths and finished ahead of Joan Of Arc, it makes her look overpriced in relation to Empress Josephine. Shale is 20/1 with William Hill, who pay four places, and well worth considering each-way if conditions don’t deteriorate too much.
English Guineas third FEV ROVER was another who perhaps didn’t handle The Curragh in the conditions. After landing a Listed race on her third start, Richard Fahey’s charge then followed-up in the Group 2 Prix du Calvados over in France. She handled soft ground just fine that day and was then an unlucky fourth in the Marcel Boussac on Arc Weekend.
On her Newmarket run when beaten just over a length by Mother Earth, Fev Rover looks another to consider each-way at big odds of 28/1 with Coral in this open contest. Nick Bradley Racing, the syndicate that owns her, have had horses run well at the meeting, so Fev Rover just had to round off our Coronation Stakes betting tips for 2021.
