Atalanta Stakes betting tips: Veracious has strong shout of Sandown spoils

Betting Tips · -

Horsebetting.com’s Atalanta Stakes betting tips say Veracious is impossible to oppose for the feature 1m Group 3 contest at Sandown on Saturday, 1 September now eased in grade. Awesometank looks the main danger based on her sole course and distance victory last time out. Powerful owners Godolphin send two out in search of the spoils, meanwhile, but the each-way preference is for Winter Lightning over Laugh Aloud. Read all about this fillies and mares only event in our 2018 Atalanta Stakes betting tips preview.Stoute has Veracious appetite for another Atalanta victorySir Michael Stoute has trained five outright winners of the 1m Group 3 Atalanta Stakes at Sandown and another of his horses dead-heated in 2013, so the Cheveley Park Stud owned filly Veracious looks to hold outstanding claims of adding to her trainer’s superb record in this females only contest on Saturday (15:00).

The three-year-old is lightly-raced after just four career starts and unexposed at the trip after just one outing over it. Connections pitched Veracious right in at the deep end on her return to action after easily winning a 7f maiden at Newmarket on her final run of last season and beating Winter Lightning, who re-opposes here, by four lengths.

This campaign has been all about Group 1s so far and Veracious ran with real credit when a 7 3/4 lengths third to superstar filly Alpha Centauri in the Coronation Stakes. That exceptional winner had previously won the Irish 1000 Guineas and has since racked up a four-timer at the highest level.

Veracious was then a two-length third to Wild Illusion when stepped up to 1m 2f for the Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. The daughter of Frankel just lost second on the line, but as at Royal Ascot finished in front of English 1000 Guineas heroine Billesdon Brook.

The form of both those Group 1 events set the standard in what is a considerable ease in grade for Veracious here. Her placed efforts in elite company have seen her receive an official rating of 110 – the highest in the line-up – and she also receives 5lb from the older fillies and mares.

Taking all that into account, this looks a glorious opportunity for Veracious to get back on the scoresheet. A repeat of either effort from this season to date will surely see her go in here, so she heads our 2018 Atalanta Stakes betting tips and market with good reason.Awesometank an each-way alternativeIt may well emerge that Awesometank as the only course and distance winner lining up against Veracious gives her most to think about, as this fellow three-year-old has a progressive profile. Trained by William Haggas, she scored at Listed level at the Esher venue last time out when beating Desert Diamond by three-quarters of a length.

That one has come out and won a similar grade affair since to give the form a solid look. Prior to her Sandown success, Awesometank readily landed a class 2 fillies’ handicap on the all-weather at Chelmsford, so she is clearly on an upward curve.

Those consecutive victories have earned her a mark of 103 and that doesn’t look like her ceiling. Further progress after just four runs at the trip and as many victories in eight career starts looks assured and Awesometank is also the beneficiary of that 5lb weight-for-age from her elders.

With lengthy absences for other contenders to overcome, there is definite each-way or forecast value in siding with her. It’s for that reason and her recent progress that Awesomestank is included among our 2018 Atalanta Stakes betting tips.Winter Lightning another to consider each-wayPowerful owners Godolphin launch a two-pronged attack at this race, courtesy of Laugh Aloud and Winter Lightning with preference for the latter at much bigger odds. John Gosden’s older mare has to overcome 455 days on the sidelines, while the younger Saeed bin Suroor trained filly has been off for just 184 days.

The latter was a four-length runner-up to Veracious in the aforementioned Newmarket maiden back in October. Connections then took Winter Lightning out to the Middle East for three runs on the fibresand at Meydan and she won two of those in the New Year with the second being a Listed contest over this trip.

This daughter of Shamardal was then stepped up further in distance, but beaten eight lengths into third with Rayya reversing the form of their previous encounters. Winter Lightning has earned a mark of 109 for her Middle East exploits, putting her just 1lb behind fellow Godolphin entrant Laugh Aloud and Veracious.

Since given a break and now returning to turf, she makes for a very interesting runner in this. Winter Lightning appeals at bigger odds than Laugh Aloud because, for all Gosden’s recent success, it is a big ask to win after over a year out.Your Next Bet
