De Bromhead can get Ladies Day off to a flyer
The 2m 5f Grade 1 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle kicks off the Ladies Day card at the Cheltenham Festival this Wednesday (13:20). In a cracking renewal, preference is for Bob Olinger who has only suffered defeat once. That came at the hands of last year’s Champion Bumper winner Ferny Hollow on his debut over the smaller obstacles.
Trained by Henry De Bromhead, Bob Olinger is an Irish point and bumper winner who has done nothing but progress this season. Since his keeping on length loss to Ferny Hollow, the Robcour owned six-year-old has won both subsequent outings.
Bob Olinger ran out a 14-length victor over subsequent scorer Dunboyne. He had the rest of that Navan field strung out like washing. De Bromhead had no hesitation pitching his charge right in at the deep end for the Grade 1 Lawlor’s of Naas Novice Hurdle on his latest start.
As Bob Olinger kept on strongly and beat the well-regarded Blue Lord by 6 1/2 lengths, he is clearly well above average. The Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle demands more, but he is open to plenty of further progress and commands respect. Bob Olinger is a 15/8 chance with Unibet for victory.

Bravemansgame and Gaillard Du Mesnil both have big potential
There are two very clear dangers here. Bravemansgame earned comparisons with Denman from trainer Paul Nicholls, and is the leading British contender by some distance. The six-year-old has never had the pace to beat subsequent Betfair Hurdle winner Soaring Glory either in bumpers or over obstacles.
Stepping back up in trip has been the making of this winning Irish pointer. Bravemansgame won minor events at Exeter and Newbury at short prices. When stepped up to the highest level, he bolted up in the Challow beating previous Grade 2 winners Star Gate and The Glancing Queen. Bravemansgame has every chance of building on that at 3/1 with William Hill here.
The rapidly progressive Gaillard Du Mesnil was favourite for the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle off the back of an easy win at the Dublin Racing Festival. Stepped up in trip by Willie Mullins, he surged clear of stable companion Stattler from the last and won easing down by five lengths.
A typical French recruit to the Mullins yard, Gaillard Du Mesnil now drops back slightly in trip. The only concern is that he stayed on strongly and won with plenty in hand, but connections didn’t enter him in the Albert Bartlett and so this is their plan. It would be no surprise if either Gaillard Du Mesnil or Bravemansgame followed-up on their own Grade 1 successes here.
Bear Ghhylls each-way value in Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle
Somerset trainer Nicky Martin is not one of National Hunt horse racing’s big names, but his undefeated Bear Ghylls makes obvious each-way appeal should one of the top three not fire. His four successes include three hurdles outings at Lingfield, Ffos Las and Exeter.
His victory over Gowel Road in the second of those has been advertised by the runner-up, who has won twice since. Bear Ghylls completed his hat-trick with victory in an Exeter handicap off top-weight. Gowel Road did likewise at Newbury, so these are more than decent types.
The Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle demands more, and Bear Ghylls needs to brush up on his jumping. However, beyond the market principals, there isn’t much to get excited about apart from him. Bear Ghylls is thus the each-way angle at 9/1 with bet365 and well worth a crack at this level.
