Jamie Clark was Sports Editor of Coral bookmakers between 2014 and 2017 during their merger with Labrokes and a key period for the British betting industry. Working as a bookie’s runner on the point to point circuit in the Midlands and at Market Rasen Racecourse where his late godfather had a trackside pitch growing up, he has had ties to horse racing all of his life. A regular visitor to Cheltenham during the National Hunt season and York over the summer, he has been involved in Horsebetting.com since its inception. Jamie now brings you his take on major news stories from the racing world and those all-important betting tips.
Irish raider laid out for Festival
Five of the last eight winners of the 3m 6f Grade 2 National Hunt Chase for novices over fences were Irish. On that basis, and the fact that running in this Cheltenham Festival contest has been the plan season, Galvin can go one better at this meeting than 12 months ago this Tuesday (!6:30).
Since chasing home Ryanair Chase fancy Imperial Aura in a Listed handicap at last year’s Festival, this seven-year-old son of Gold Well has won all four starts. Galvin won a couple of summer chases at Killarney and would’ve run in the Galway Plate but for a bruised foot.
He then added the Grade 3 Like-A-Butterfly Novice Chase at Tipperary to his CV. Galvin followed-up on that and completed his four-time at this venue in October. The way that he led at the last and ran on well up the hill bodes very well for stepping up in trip.
Galvin, whose owner is Ronnie Bartlett, goes well fresh. His winter break shouldn’t be an issue, and he’s been laid out for National Hunt Chase glory ever since the autumn. Other rivals are coming here instead of tackling Monkfish in the Brown Advisory, so he may have an edge over the opposition. Galvin is 2/1 favourite with William Hill for victory.

Dual Grade 2 winning novice chaser Next Destination rates the biggest danger. Trained by Paul Nicholls for Malcolm Denmark, he was a top-class novice hurdler when in the care of Willie Mullins. Injuries kept the nine-year-old off the track for a couple of seasons, but he proved he still has all his old abilit.
After chasing home Mares’ Hurdle contender Roksana over the smaller obstacles at Wetherby on his comeback run, Next Destination tackled fences. Nicholls campaigned him smartly over the winter, avoiding Kempton and running him either side of Christmas.
Next Destination landed the John Francome Novices’ Chase at the Newbury Winter Carnival on a taking bow in this sphere. He then followed-up over the stiff fences at Warwick under a penalty in the Hampton and really toughed things out. As he won going away, this extra trip promises to suit.
The only negative with Next Destination is the fact that he hasn’t been targeting this. Harry Cobden, who again takes the ride, suggested Aintree might suit him best. There is also a sense Next Destination runs in the National Hunt Chase so as to avoid Monkfish. However, his claims are solid and odds of 4/1 with Unibet reflect that.
Snow Leopardess the National Hunt Chase each-way play
It’s a more open renewal of this historic race than the betting suggests. Irish raiders Escaria Ten and Loyal Royal are among those who could also go well. Remastered from the David Pipe stable is three from three over fences, including victory in the Grade 2 Reynoldstown at Ascot last time out, so he could also have a say.
At bigger odds is the sole mare in the line-up, Snow Leopardess. Trained by Charlie Longsdon, this nine-year-old daughter of Martaline progressed throughout the autumn. She won at Haydock by staying, and that’s the name of the game for the National Hunt Chase.
Snow Leopardess was far from disgraced when battling out the finish with Canelo in the Grade 3 Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby on Boxing Day. Now given a break to freshen up, she switches from an open handicap to a conditions nvice contest. This demands more, but Snow Leopardess gets weight all-round via a 7lb sex allowance.
Over a marathon trip, that can only be a plus. Another stamina laden mare in Ms Parfois finished second in this three years ago. Snow Leopardess has a gutsy attitude, so looks a good each-way bet at 16/1 with BetVictor, who pay four places on this.
