Read our 2018 King George V Stakes betting preview to discover why.Communique the King George V Stakes puntCONTENT FOR THE NAP / SELECTION BET The King George V Stakes is an ultra-competitive 1m 4f handicap that bring proceedings to a close on day three of Royal Ascot (17:35), and Communique looks to hold leading claims of enhancing the superb record in the race for trainer Mark Johnston.
Johnston has saddled the winner on six occasions, most recently in 2014 with Elidor. In Communique, he has a progressive three-year-old who opened his account in fine style when landing the valuable London Gold Cup Handicap over 1m 2f at Newbury last month.
The son of Casamento travelled kindly through on the heels of the leaders and, after being forced to switch to make his challenge inside the final furlong, found plenty when asked to go about his business.
Communique stayed on strongly inside the last 100 yards to win going away by 1 3/4 lengths from stable companion Poet’s Prince.
He hit the line hard suggesting that the further two furlongs in this would be right up his street. Communique has been hit with a 9lb rise in the weights for that success, but the race is traditional a very strong affair which throws up useful types and plenty of subsequent winners.
Johnston’s charge looks as if he has he is by far from the finished article and should have plenty more to offer. Communique also had more than one entry at this meeting, so that fact that connections decided to run him in a race which he does so well is very revealing in itself and makes him the bet.
Dubhe a big danger despite top weightLeading owners Godolphin saw their famous blue colours carried to victory 12 months ago by Atty Perse, and Dubhe looks a big player for them despite having to shoulder top weight of 9st 7lb.
The Charlie Appleby trained colt has had just one run this season and that saw him beat Communique in a five-runner affair at Sandown. Dubhe ran on strongly from off the pace to score readily by four lengths.
He now meets the winner on the same terms, so in theory should confirm that form and has clearly been saved for this.
However, the vast majority of his runs have come in small fields and it remains to be seen if he can deal with the hustle and bustle of this contest which is sure to be run at a searching gallop.
If he can, then Dubhe looks sure go go close and rates the biggest danger to Communique.
Hes Amazing appeals each-wayHe’s Amazing finished behind Communique in the London Gold Cup, but could well get close now stepped up in trip and looks the each-way value at the odds on offer.
The gelding was beaten six lengths into fifth that day, yet was doing all his best work at the finish having come under pressure three form home when the pace quickened.
Prior to that, He’s Amazing had shown a really likeable attitude to gamely beat Midnight Wilde at Newmarket.
He also now meets Communique on 10lb better terms, so is by no means out of this if the extra two furlongs in this does play to his strengths and unlocks further improvement.
He’s Amazing can be backed at nearly three times the odds of Communique. That looks plain wrong in a wide-open race of this nature.
