There’s three that look in with a chance, but Paloma Blue has the best hurdles form, so is taken over Jetz – an albeit unlucky faller over course and distance last time out – and Duca De Thaix.
Trained by Henry De Bromhead, this six-year-old son of Stowaway may have only won two of his eight career starts, but has also run some solid races in defeat. After landing his racecourse debut in a bumper at Fairyhouse in January 2017, connections went straight to the Punchestown Festival with Paloma Blue where he chased ill-fated mare Fayonagh home in the Grade 1 Champion National Hunt Flat Race.
He was giving the winner a 7lb sex allowance, so a 5 1/2 lengths defeat was no disgrace whatsoever. Paloma Blue was an exciting hurdles prospect last term and won at the third time of asking at Leopardstown during their Christmas Festival, having been previously touched off by a head at Punchestown and third to Next Destination at Naas.
Connections pitched him right in at the deep end next when a free-running nine-length third to Samcro in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle at the inaugural Dublin Racing Festival. Paloma Blue was then beaten just three lengths and fourth to Summerville in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham when keeping on but just lacking the pace to challenge up the hill.
The runner-up Kalashnikov and the fifth horse home, Claimantakinforgan – who was 2 1/4 lengths behind Paloma Blue – both came out and made winning chase debuts this season. That gives the form a rock solid look, and there were excuses for him when 10th last time out at the Punchestown Festival as he pulled his left fore shoe.
If taking to this sphere like those in and around him in the Supreme, then Paloma Blue should be winning this based on his hurdles mark of 149 – the highest in this line-up. It’s for those reasons that he heads our Navan betting tips for November 25 and rates the NAP of this eight-race card.Magnium the Monksfield fancyOne of the chief supporting races to the main event is the Grade 3 Monksfield Novice Hurdle over 2m 4f (13:00), and Magnium is the least exposed in the nine-runner field, so is an each-way bet at worst after finishing second in a similar grade race on debut for new handler Jessica Harrington last time out. This five-year-old son of Westerner has had just three starts but has a win and place to his name already.
Although beaten on his bow for former handler Tony Martin by 18 lengths at this venue back in March, Magnium didn’t really act on the heavy going. A yielding surface was more to his liking, however, on his penultimate start at Killarney in May. After tracking the leaders in third place under regular rider Robbie Power, he moved closer three out and hit the front after the second last.
Magnium then stayed on well up the run-in and beat Edelpour by a couple of lengths. The third home, Paris Texas, has won since and also put in some placed efforts went stepped up to 2m 3f, so that suggests Magnium may be suited by the extra distance. Owner Patrick Rabbitt decided to change trainers and bring him to Harrington’s stable after this run.
Connections stepped Magnium up in class and into Grade 3 company on his reappearance at Navan, where he outran odds of 20/1 and chased Araman home. He had chased the leaders and been keen early on and fended off other challengers from three out, but got headed at the last and just couldn’t go with the winner.
As Magnium was only beaten three lengths and finished a length in front of the re-opposing Choungaya, he shouldn’t have much to worry about from that one. He’s open to the most improvement now up in trip and isn’t exposed like top weight Dinons.
In what is admittedly a competitive renewal, Magnium makes for a solid bet to make the frame and should be aiming even higher. He is thus taken in our Navan betting tips for November 25 over the likes of Felix Desjy, who disappointed last time out, and a respected rival in First Approach.Salty Boy the Proudstown pick each-wayAfter the Troytown, there’s the 14-runner extended 2m 6f Grade B Proudstown Handicap Hurdle (15:00), and shrewd handler Margaret Mullins has an each-way contender in Salty Boy. This is a typically wide-open renewal and leading owner JP McManus saddles four, but this other five-year-old son of Stowaway and an Oscar mare is bred for stamina in abundance.
Salty Boy is a point winner, who is very lightly-raced after just four subsequent starts under rules. He was a 14 lengths third to the aforementioned Dinons in a 2m 5f maiden hurdle at Roscommon in August and then just beaten three lengths when fourth to Percy Veer during the Listowel Harvest Festival.
Connections then turned Salty Boy out in a Downpatrick bumper where he was third, but he was soon back over the obstacles and broke his maiden tag earlier this month at Clonmel over an extended 2m 3f. He made virtually all and, although not fluent at times, stayed on strongly under Danny Mullins to win by 6 1/2 lengths.
That has earned Salty Boy an opening handicap mark of 126 – the same as a more obvious race fancy in the Joseph O’Brien trained High Sparrow and the aforementioned Edelpour. This obviously demands more, but as he’s shaped as a stayer and in a race where some bookmakers are likely to pay extra places, Salty Boy can hit the frame with many in opposition having lots to do to get competitive off their ratings.
