A regular visitor to Cheltenham during the National Hunt season and York over the summer, he has been involved in Horsebetting.com since its inception. Jamie now brings you his take on major news stories from the racing world and those all-important betting tips.
Progressive performer can get Festival off to a flyer
Opening the 2021 Cheltenham Festival is the 2m Grade 1 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle this Tuesday (13:20), and Soaring Glory looks value granted further progress. Trained by Jonjo O’Neill, this six-year-old beat leading British Ballymore contender Bravemansgame on his debut over obstacles at Chepstow.
Soaring Glory then ran a fine race in defeat behind the potentially smart Dussart under a penalty at Newbury. The winner misses the Festival through injury. Despite falling at Wetherby when sent off at 1/8, Soaring Glory was far from disgraced when third in the Grade 2 Kennel Gate next time out at Ascot.
My Drogo, who he gave weight to, came out and landed the Premier Novices’ Hurdle at Kelso under a penalty. That advertises the form nicely, and Soaring Glory has done that himself with a classy victory in the Grade 3 Betfair Hurdle back at Newbury.
A 10lb rise in his rating looks lenient. The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle demands more, but that handicap route has launched some careers. At the odds on offer, Soaring Glory looks the value bet at 6/1 with Betfred in a renewal lacking depth.

Appreciate It the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle favourite
At the head of the betting is Appreciate It. Although this dual Grade 1 winner commands respect, he looks plenty short enough based on certain factors. Trainer Willie Mullins has had multiple beaten favourite since last landing the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in 2015 with Douvan.
There is also the fact that Appreciate It was outpaced by injured stable companion Ferny Hollow in last year’s Champion Bumper. That is cause for concern if anything shows a turn of foot against the favourite here.
Once such example could be Metier, held in high regard by trainer Harry Fry. He bolted up on bottomless ground at Sandown when landing the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle by 10 lengths and is now 4/1 with bet365 for this.
As a recruit off the Flat with winning form on better surfaces, however, Metier must enter calculations and could be a bigger danger than Appreciate It. I am keen to take the favourite on in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, based on trends and the fact that he won an extended bumper at Leopardstown prior to Cheltenham last year.
Ballyadam and Blue Lord have something to find
Of the remainder, Ballyadam has had two cracks at Appreciate It and not been able to land a blow. Now trained by Henry De Bromhead, this Cheveley Park Stud owned Fame And Glory gelding is from the same Irish point background as the favourite.
There is no obvious reason why Ballyadam should reverse form. Switching stables so close to Cheltenham is not ideal either, so Metier and Soaring Glory look more likely candidates.
Blue Lord should be a strong stayer at this trip. Also trained by Mullins, the Simon Munir and Isaac Souede owned six-year-old chased home Bob Olinger over further on his penultimate start. Since then, the Blue Bresil gelding placed third behind Appreciate It and Ballyadam.
There is a bit to find on that form, so Blue Lord needs a couple of market principals to have an off day. If running up to his official rating of 145 and granted further progress, however, then he may hit the frame at odds of 10/1 with Boylesports for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.
