Ballyoisin has a touch of class about him, however, and is readily taken to continue where he left off over the summer following a 59-day break in the 2m Grade 2 Fortria Chase at Navan on Sunday (14:10).
The seven-year-old has won five of his 11 starts over fences, including two since the Punchestown Festival where he was sent off 8/1 favourite for a Grade B Handicap Hurdle and a never nearer nine-length eighth to True Self. In the first of those at Killarney, Ballyoisin made all in a Grade 3 and was an easy 10 lengths winner over Alisier D’Irlande.
He then followed-up at a summer jumps meeting at Punchestown over 2m 5f where he was in command approaching the last and push eight lengths clear of Woodland Opera by Barry Geraghty. As the runner-up has come out and won the Gowran Park Champion Chase since, then chased home Cheltenham Gold Cup fourth Road To Respect in the Down Royal equivalent, the form has a rock solid look to it.
Connections sent Ballyoisin for a spin over hurdles at Listowel’s Harvest Festival in September. Under a 7lb claimer, he chased the leaders in fourth, took closer order on the inner from three out and progressed to take up the running approaching the last. He then stayed on well up the run-in to score by a length from Shanning.
It seems Ballyoisin can do no wrong at present and tops the ratings in this five-runner chase off a mark of 157. While that only puts him 1lb ahead of Doctor Phoenix, that one is a 10-year-old who isn’t open to further progress. Ballyoisin, meanwhile, is the youngest in this line-up and based on his recent performances there may be even more to come from him.
With Geraghty back in the plate, the drop back in trip holding no fears and the horse in the form of his life, it’s impossible to look past Ballyoisin in this. Felix Desjy brings very smart bumper form to the table having won a point-to-point previously. His 7 1/2 lengths sixth to Relegate in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival sets a clear standard and, although beaten further in the Punchestown Festival equivalent, he improved to fifth on his final start in this sphere.
Those efforts in the spring left the impression Felix Desjy was very much one to follow in Elliott’s yard. There was lots to like about the way he settled on hurdles debut at Galway last month and easily won by 10 lengths.
While this demands more, Felix Desjy is helped by the fact his main market rival Quick Grabim must shoulder a 7lb penalty for his previous Grade 3 win. With even more to come and some big targets in his future, this latest Gigginstown prospect rates our next best bet of the eight-race card.Coney Island worth a look in Lismullen each-wayThe feature race is the 2m 4f Grade 2 Lismullen Hurdle (13:35) which always attracts small but select fields. This year’s renewal is no exception and Coney Island is an intriguing contender switching back to the smaller obstacles. His mark of 145 in this sphere may underestimate him, so he’s an each-way option in a competitive contest.
Trained by Edward Harty, the seven-year-old is another owned by McManus and has only finished outside the frame once in six hurdles starts. While Coney Island hasn’t been the easiest to train, he is rated almost a stone higher over fences than hurdles which means he may actually have less to find than it appears.
He was second at this venue to the aforementioned Woodland Opera in a maiden hurdle on his second start before breaking that tag next time out. Coney Island also landed the ultra-competitive Irish EBF Novice Handicap Hurdle Series Final at Fairyhouse before chasing home subsequent Punchestown Gold Cup winner Bellshill in the 2016 Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle over 3m.
Connections went novice chasing with Coney Island in 2016-17 and he turned on the style when delivering at the highest level in the Drinmore at Leopardstown over this trip. Anibale Fly and Road To Respect, who were third and fourth in this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, were in-behind this son of Flemensfirth that day.
Injury then kept Coney Island out for a year, but he shaped with real promise on his return to action in a graduation chase at Ascot in December 2017. He was at least 10 lengths behind the leader after crossing four out, but showed scintillating speed to make that deficit up and hit the front two from home.
Coney Island soon drew away and was eased close home, but clearly value for more than the nine-length winner margin. While he was far from foot perfect, the way in which he ate up ground meant he was an obvious strong fancy for the Ascot Chase over the same course and distance.
A blunder at the 10th saw Coney Island pulled up in that Grade 1, however, and when making similar errors in the Devenish Chase during the Fairyhouse Easter Festival. The switch back to hurdles is absolutely fascinating from connections as he clearly has huge ability.
Elliott mare Apple’s Jade has been turned over when sent off favourite on her last two starts, while fellow Gigginstown runner Identity Thief is somewhat flattered by his Grade 1 win at Aintree over 3m. That was a weak renewal of the Liverpool Hurdle and, while improving youngster Dortmund Park has wins at the trip, the value each-way play is Coney Island here and he’s chanced in our Navan betting tips for November 11.Your Next Bet
